Lod Cave, Mae Hong Son Province, Thailand

4.5 (350 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Soppong Caverns & Caves

Great Local Attraction

We visited using a one-day pass for numerous attractions in the Pia district. The pass was 200 THB per adult and then some attractions charged extra for a guide and parking. We paid 210 THB for two adults to enter the cave with a guide on a bamboo raft, this included parking for a car (I think it was 50 THB for the car). You can purchase the pass at any of the attractions and do them in any order within one day.

    Three Wonderful Caves To Explore
Lod Cave (or Tham Lod) is a cave between Mae Hon Song City and Pai City. Its about halfway between the two and around 1-2 hours motorcycle from either direction. I think you can easily book day trips here with the tour organizers in Pai, but going on your own is also easily done. There are three caves here, with a tiered prices depending on how many you want to do. I would recommend doing all three since you're in the area and the third cave is the coolest (you get to take a raft!). I think its 500THB for foreigners per group of 3. We had 4 people, so its 1000THB for two groups. Since it was low season (in April), we didn't see any other tourists to tag along with at the entrance. If you like feeding fish, the entrance counter sells bags of fish food that you can scatter into the water at either the entrance or on the raft to the third cave. I bought two (though I cannot remember the price, I don't think it was much more than 50THB a bag). The first two caves are nice, with stone and cave formations resembling various animals and other things (like a boob, for reals, the guides will take pains to point it out while giggling). The third cave involves boarding a bamboo raft that is poled down a river by a boatman. the river has catfish and other species that you can feed as you float along. The cave has some prehistoric painting and coffins from 20,000 years ago that might interest the history buff too. As all caves are, its somehow cooler, yet incredibly humid, so you sweat more inside. I would also STRONGLY RECOMMEND bringing and wearing a hat inside the cave. (Hear me out guys.) The cave has thousands of swallows and bats roosting in the natural rafters and the floor is literally covered in guano and droppings. I don't envy combing poo out of my hair, so do as the guides do and wear a hat. It saved one of my family members' hairline and reputation by deflecting an accurately aimed ball of poo from the crown of his head. Thank God.
