Musee National des Mines de Fer Luxembourgeoises, Luxembourg District, Luxembourg

4.5 (55 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Rumelange Speciality Museums

A very pleasant surprise.

At a cemetery looking for my wife's ancestors we ran into a very friendly gravedigger, Carlos, who told us amongst other things to go to this museum. I'm very glad we did. The tours are led in Luxembourgish, but the audio guides have a quality English option. We were the only ones on our particular tour, so the guide tried his darnedest to give us the tour in broken English. It was SO SWEET! Very interesting material and a well put together tour. Also the restaurant on the grounds of the museum is very good. And there is a nice little playground to keep the kids entertained while you wait for your tour to start. Caution: The tour takes around 2 hours or so, and it is quite chilly within the mine (~50's Farenheit). Bring a jacket or sweatshirt no matter the outside temperature

Very interesting, different, and a lot of fun
Touring this "museum" was one of the highlights of our trip. It is very interesting and unique. It is not a traditional museum in that it involves taking a small train ride deep into a former ore mine. The mine was closed in the 1980s as economic factors changed for ore mining and steel production in Luxembourg. Many of the guides are former mine employees. Although they have a small traditional museum in the visitor center, the main features of this museum involve learning about the evolution of mining techniques and equipment and seeing them displayed in their natural habitat deep underground. They provide hand held audio guides in several languages that describe the equipment and history of mining in Luxembourg. I'm not particularly interested in mining, but still I found this to be very fascinating, educational and just plain fun to be able to walk around inside the mine shafts. We learned about this museum after purchasing the Luxembourg Card that provides free or discounted admission to numerous Luxembourg attractions. I highly recommend the Luxembourg Card and this museum. You need a car to get here, but there is plenty of free parking at the museum. It is less than a 30 min drive south of Luxembourg City on excellent roads that are well signed. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for your visit plus some waiting time for the next scheduled tour down into the mine.

    Educational tour through Luxembourgish history.
My birthday party was located somewhere special this time, namely in the mines of Luxembourg! We had a very knowledgeable guide in Joe, who showed us every nook and cranny! What the people in the early times of the mines went through, is very impressive, the work they put into the country is astounding. 12 hours a day, 6 days a week with hand drills and no power tools, standing in water waste deep. Then the technology revolution and the improvements and regression. I highly recommend this tour! The museum is getting redone, bigger and more informative.
