Wuai Market, Liaoning, China

Shopping Scene Par Excellence

Great Chinese shopping experience, block after block, stall after stall, building after building. Every kind of good you can imagine. Whole buildings of shoes, clothes, office equipment and more. If you like to shop, do not miss this. Unlike some markets ion other cities, people here are very friendly and there is really no hassling of the customers by shop owners. BARGAIN ON EVERYTHING...Foreigners should feign total indifference, be willing to walk away, and pay no more than 30% of the initial asking price.

    Enjoy the Haggling
This market is well organized and will provide you with a great variety of items to buy. It’s important that one has an idea of what you want and are willing to pay. It’s worthwhile to take the time to move from stall to stall selling the same types of items to get an idea of the prices. Each stall does try to differentiate itself with what they sell so wander and haggle a bit without buying. Once you decide what you want, offer 1/3 of what they ask and then haggle with a smile. Be nice about it but be firm and ready to walk away. I have found these vendors kinder than some I met in Beijing.

    Get ready to haggle
Large buildings with 5 floors. It is best to arrive and reconnoiter before you begin to buy anything. One building has a floor of watch kiosks. Lots to see and wander around with. Silk scarves to be had on the first floor of another building. I would suggest never buying from the first two stores you go into. Get the idea of the prices and be sure to set your own price before you haggle. Overall, give yourself lots of time to wander and enjoy.
