A Nice Escape from the City

The tombs, more commonly known as the East Tomb Park (Dong Ling Gong Yuanr), are a great outing from the city. Just a few kms outside of the third ring road, the park is wooded and lush. The tomb sits at the back of the park and is an earthen mound. Several 17th century Chinese structures were built on top of a hill just before the tomb, as sites where no doubt ceremonies to honor the emporer were held. The structures are similar to those in Beijing's Ming Tombs, but on a smaller scale. Quite interesting. The walkway to the tomb is lined with Chinese mythological creatures and other animal statues, much like the Ming tombs. The park is a great place to visit an ancient Chinese artifact of national renown and also have an outing in the woods. You can hike through the woods along various paths. Kids will enjoy the outdoors, where their imaginations will let them become warriors or emporers hunting the enemy in the woods.

    Historical value
This tomb is also known as the East Tomb and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I almost missed it if I hadn't walked all the way to the back of the ground. In the back, one could see the mound of earth covered with green grass, which is the tomb that is well maintained. It is the tomb of the founding Emperor of the Qing Dynasty, Emperor Nurhaci and his Empress Xiaocigao. This site was used during the entire dynasty to conduct ceremonial rituals. It has various rooms for rituals preparation. It is difficult to imagine what possession the royalty placed in the tomb. I hope no one would disturb their resting place by excavating just to see what it holds. The guard towers must have a lot of stories and history to tell. While this is a small place, it holds important relics and history. A must visit place when in Shenyang for those interested in history.
