Charming small resort town
Bolsena (both the lake and the town) was charming! It feels like a little resort on the Riviera but on a lake. Also, compared with the crowds of Florence and Rome, this place felt calm and isolated. It was almost as if North Americans had not discovered this yet. (It's not listed in Rick Steves...) We swam on the lake's beach and then at up in town at Cafe Papaya for a quick lunch. It was one of our favorite places in all of Italy!

Great family holiday destination
We holiday in Bolsena every year as we have family here. It's a great place for family holidays, the comune (local council) provides evening entertainment in the different squares around the town, these can be bands, dancers, gymnastic shows and many more. Also provides day time entertainment of markets, re-enactments, children's games and many more. We have enjoyed visiting the castle, the princes home, the churches and catacombs and taking a boat ride around the princess island and visiting other towns around the lake and of course swimming in the lake. We have also had day trips to Rome which is about 90 minutes train journey from Orvieto. It would be useful to have a car to visit other local towns but if you plan to just stay in Bolsena you can easily walk to everywhere you like to go.

Tranquil
Not far from Orvieto, this large lake is definitely worth a half-day visit. You have a public beach AND a small walled village to walk around in. Good eating, nice little stores with artisan goods.
