Athienou Local History, Lace, Halloumi and Bread
Lovely museum demonstrating the local history of the area, the local lace production and local town history. The town has a tradition of a special country bread and traditional Halloumi cheese production. If you plan your trip to Athienou in advance, it is recommended contact the museum to ask for the Bread and Halloumi tours. As the town is close to the border of the Turkish occupied territories you can see tanks from the museum balcony,

First Class day out in Athienou
We were welcomed at the Museum by Eleni of the Cyprus Tourist Organisation as a part of Larnaka's Winter Experience Programme. She immediately took us to the House of Father Kallinikos where we were shown examples of his work and invited to join an art class - amazingly the organiser was originally from Brighton, England but has lived in Cyprus for 50 years. Next we were given a demonstration of Halloumi Cheese making and then invited to sample the end products along with bread, honey, nuts, wine and water - a veritable feast!. When we had had our fill, Eleni took us to a restored Flour Mill then back to Kallinikeio Museum. At both places she gave us a detailed guided tour of the exhibits then invited us to join her at the Pea Café opposite for hot Almond Squash or Coffee. She even waited until our bus back to Larnaka Bus Station arrived to make sure we were safely on our return journey. We can thoroughly recommend this "Traditional Day in Athienou" as a taste of true Cypriot hospitality.

Go on Thursday
This is a really interesting museum. It is very well laid out with excellent descriptions of the exhibits. It is much, much better than many of the museums in the bigger cities. And unlike in Larnaca it is OPEN. Yes, it is a small museum but the antiquities are well explained and then there are other exhibits featuring local art and history. The staff speak excellent English and make a real effort to be available for questions. If you go on a Thursday you can go down the street to visit a halloumi cheese dairy. Making the local cheese the traditional way AND you can taste it all. Wonderful.
