Colourful art gallery, atelier and home museum of a Lappish artist

The Särestöniemi Museum environment consists of several buildings, of which the most important are the Särestöniemi family farm and Reidar Särestöniemi's studio and gallery. Old and new mix and match in the museum area. The Särestöniemi farm from the 19th century represents the traditional way of building in the North of Finland, whereas the gallery and studio, both designed in the 1970's by the acclaimed Finnish architects Reima and Raili Pietilä, join the tradition of modern Finnish architecture and its ideal of harmony with the surrounding environment. The personality of Reidar Särestöniemi has been used as the starting point for the newer buildings in the Särestöniemi area. The studio, where the artist both lived and worked, was preceded by an earlier studio that was destroyed by a fire in 1977. The foundations of this old studio can be seen in the museum area.

Must see when you are around!
Really loved this museum! The artworks are just very impressive. They give a wonderful reflection of the Finnish landscape in an abstract way. His colorful paintings made me curious to see the nature once in spring time as well (was there in winter time). Couldn't stop looking at them! Also the road to get to the museum is a wonderful adventure, since museum lies a bit remotely in the middle of the nature. This really adds to the experience and gives an impression on how Sarestoniemi must have lived his life.

    A gem in Kittilä!
He was a controversial figure in Kittilä and also one of the few artists who could enjoy financial success, too, during their life time. There is the birth house and also two toher gallery buildings on of whis is designed by Reima and Raili Pietiä - a world famous architect couple. His paintings create the world class atmosphere here in "the middle of nothing" and the artistic bed for the dog was also very impressive - as well as the large swimming pool! One of the galleries has burned down but still the site leaves you wondering for a long time about life in general.....
