Go local and visit the home of RoKi Icehockey club.
For those who prefer to go off the beaten track and enjoy to at least try to go local, I can highly recommend to attend a game of the RoKi Rovaniemi Icehockey team. Icehockey is the most popular sport in Finland so you'll find yourself among locals if you decide to go. The Lappi Areena is an all purpose ice hall, but serves as the home to the RoKi team. It's located on the other side of the Ounasvaara hill, opposite to the city centre and can be reached by taxi of by foot. don't bother reserving tickets beforehand as RoKi is not performing tremendously well (at least not this season) and the games therefore very seldom sell out. So it's pretty easy to get tickets really. The Laapi Areena is not a terribly large place as compared to your average US NHL stadium, but it's nice and cosy. The place features a RoKi fanshop as well as a dedicated RoKi bar. Last but not least the staff are friendly and helpful, probably also because not an awful lot of tourists will actually attend these games.So by all means, if you enjoy trying something genuine, to be among the local population and like sports in general, I can highly recommend going there.
