Dolmen La Chabola de la Hechicera, La Rioja, Spain

Best dolmen in Basque country

Located a short drive from LaGuardia and in the middle of a vineyard overlooking the small village of Elvillar is La Hechicera, an important megalithic dolmen (burial ground), the largest and best preserved in Basque country. Three large stones support the horizonal ‘roof’. 9 large stones form a polygonal shape. Aside from the monument itself, the spectacular village & vineyard views, and some raspberry bushes there is nothing else here. The access is well marked along the road from LaGuardia to Elvillar. If your interests lie in prehistory and you are in this part of Rioja, don’t miss.

A very nice megalithic stone surrounded by vineyards
Dolmen la Chabola de la Hechizera is one of some megalithic stones located in the surroundings of Laguardia, in the well-known wine region La Rioja Alavesa, in the Basque Country. We visited some megalithic stones (like Dolmen El Sotillo, Dolmen San Martín and Dolmen del Alto de la Huesera), but it was the most beautiful, because it is very well preserved and it is surrounded by vineyards (very nice in october) and you can see the church of a little town from here. Really very beautiful. Also, here you can learn about the history of this sacred place. Really a very nice monument and a very interesting region for megalithic stones-lovers.

    Beautiful site
This is the first Dolmen site I've seen in Spain. It's very beautiful, scenic and rich in ancient history. I was very surprised that it's not very visited. One of the most unique structures anywhere in Spain. Like a miniature Stone Hedge without the massive tourist crowds. Well worth the detour if visiting La Rioja.
