Battle against the Moors.

Great historical spot and panoramic view of Rioja. This is where the great battle scene against the Muslim occupiers/invaders occurred during the 8th century. The Spanish King refused to pay homage to their occupier. The Great Santiago de Compostela (St. James) appeared on his steed to lead the battle and crushing the Muslim onslaught. The beginning of the Spain's reconquest against Muslim hoards.

A place to visit to take amazing pics. Beautiful view!
You have to be careful walking up and down the castle because is not easy and no warning signs around. I am 54 and fit, actually I visited the Castle when I was a Pilgrim walking from France to Santiago de Compostela. I needed my son's help to go to the top, but was amazing.

It is a fabulous view from here once you scrabble up
We saw this castle atop stone cliffs from miles away and we felt that we just had to visit. There were no other visitors the whole time we were there, so if you like peace, you should find it here! You can drive as far as the small village below the castle, but then you gave to scrabble up unmarked and unmade tracks and in places steps without a handrail before you get to the castle. You need sensible shoes at the least to deal with the stony tracks. There is only one information panel available at the bottom of the hill in Spanish and English which explained in brief the history of the castle. Once you get into the castle though , the view is fantastic over the whole of La Rioja, and one can appreciate why a castle was built here. The present building is quite badly deteriorated and only part can be accessed, so you have to imagine quite a lot how it would have been when last in use.
