Awesome History

We hired a guide for the 45 minute walk through the Chan Chan ruins. It was a necessity. The ruins are beautiful, but very difficult to understand the symbolism and purpose of most of it without a knowledgeable local. Bring a hat or umbrella and sunblock, water and a snack perhaps. You will be in direct sunlight for the entire tour! Super cool.

Good introduction to history of nearby ruins
Affordable, 10 soles per entry when I went with Peruvians. Museum is on the small side, does not take long to go through. It's worth it to pay for a guide to explain more of the artifacts/history for both the museum and actual ruins nearby.

More than 1000 year old Chimu civilization
This museum offers a good overview of Chimu society (870 to 1470 AD). Especially the maquette of Chan Chan, an adobe town which once used to have 10,000 dwellings is worth while. Urban development eventually conquered by the Incas in 1471. Admission fee 10 Soles (no discount for seniors). Easily reached by local bus from Trujillo or Huanchaco (stops in front of the museum).
