  4. 4.5 Guruvayur Temple (1.132 reviews)
    - A peaceful Darshan at Guruvayur

    Guruvayur Temple image
Everything was smooth, but do the online booking for Darshan well in advance, at the Guruvayur Dewaswom official website, to make it hassle free. If one misses it then an on-counter ticket has to be purchased and it would cost Rs 1000. The only challenge is that there was no place to change clothes and wear Lungi so one should change at Hotel and go for Darshan (Western outfit not allowed). There was no rush during the weekday and could get a peaceful darshan of the lord. See more..
  5. 4.5 Guruvayur Temple (1.122 reviews)

    Guruvayur Temple image
This temple in Thrissur district, Kerala is dedicated to Lord Guruvayurappan, where lord Vishnu is worshiped as Krishna in his four armed form. Known as Bhuloka Vaikunta, the Holy abode of Vishnu on Earth, this temple is one of the important places of worship for Hindus in Kerala.

The temple opens at 3.00 am for 'Nirmalya darshan' and it is a divine experience to pray during that time. After Guruvayur, it is good to visit Mammiyoor Siva temple, located a few meters away, after visiting Guruvayur.

Dress code: Traditional attire like saree, salwar kameez, long skirts for women and girls and dhoti for men

Mobile phones are strictly prohibited inside the temple. They can be safely deposited at the lockers right outside the temple.

The temple can get very crowded on weekends and auspicious days like Ekadashi, Janmashtami etc.

Punnathoor kotta, a place where elephants belonging to the temple is also closeby and can be visited if interested.

  6. 4.0 Church of Saint Francis (1.055 reviews)
    - When historic reference is enough

    Church of Saint Francis image
My wife and I visited this Church on a guided tour of India and we were taken there on the promise of an important historical monument. You need to remove your shoes at the entrance before you go inside. Our guide explained that St. Francis Church is India’s oldest European church and was first constructed around 1503 by the Portuguese. It was originally built with wood, but was subsequently replaced by the present stone structure in 1516 AD. The fact that Vasco da Gama was originally buried at St. Francis Church when he died in Kochi in 1524 and his body was moved to Lisbon in 1538, doesn't take away from the fact that the internal vaults contain some other important occupants from the 17th Century. So the significance is there. The church is in need of repair and the Parish looks like they need to use their money to help people, more than rebuilding old churches. For the historical significance alone, the site is worth a visit. See more..

Visited this temple in October 2022, on Amavasya. Very beautiful and ancient temple. The ride from Vythiri is about 2 hours and trough forest areas surrounded by mountains. Both the ride and the temple location is very scenic. Get good prasadam at temple but on communal steel plates - would encourage other visitors to get their own plates. Behind the temple is the river Papasani which was very cool and pleasant. All in all, a serene and spritual experience. Must visit for anyone in the vicinity. See more..

The temple is an old architectural splendor and is spread over a huge area with a large pond. The temple has two gates of entry the Eastern & Western Gate. The Western Gate has lot of shops & adequate parking. The temple is famous for the " Ambalapuzzha Palpayasam ( Rice Kheer/ Rice Pudding)", which is distributed at 12 noon. The Palpayasam needs to be pre-booked or if you are lucky you can stand in queue at 10:30 am and try and get it on the same day. The temple also has a elephant permanently inside the temple premises. 11. 4.5 Janardhana Swami Temple (323 reviews)
    - Historic and Modern; Rejuvenating Experience
    Religious Sites
    Janardhana Swami Temple image
It is one of the best temples I have seen in Kerala. It is located not far from the Papanasam beach. The temple is unique in the sense that the inner part does not have any 'upadavatas'. Just the sanctum of Janardana Swamy and that is all. All upadevatas are located in the outer ring. The deity in standing pose is a 'Pitrdeva' and that is why the temple is famous and popular for annual 'bali'. The large plot is generally silent and has a pious atmosphere. A visit to this temple is really rejuvenating-both for mind and body (soul too can be added if you please) It is a must visit in Varkala. See more..

    - Amazing and beautiful “Snake King” temple

    Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple image
This remote temple is set in a beautiful forest. The building is in a typical Keralian style and shows the intricate woodwork so typical of these temples. As it is dedicated to to Snake King (God?) there is an extraordinary display of snake art - the Cobra being the snake. There are carvings and painted reliefs but most incredible are the thousands ( supposedly, 30,000) of stone images of Cobras. The grounds of the temple are beautiful and warrant a long stroll to the Kali temple. There were no more than half a dozen other visitors when we were there so the quietness was wonderful. See more..

Compared to the Meenakshi Temple this temple just outside Madurai is smaller but nicer to people (with people I mean people that couldn't enter the inner sanctum of the Meenakshi Temple). We were kindly invited to visit the inner sanctum which was amazing. Of course the devotees look at you (because you are a foreigner) but still..it's amazing to see that a white person is allowed to do some offerings. Definitely will visit this temple again soon. WE happened to visit this temple on an afternoon when Lord Rama had gone around he surrounding villages to enable his devotees to worship him. He was to return back from across the river on a boat and decided to wait for this occasion. It was a worthwhile wait since this happens only once a year and perchance we were there and wanted to enjoy this experience. He arrived across the river on the elephant which took him around the villages and then crossed the river with only two boatmen helping Him cross. It was a serene sight and we enjoyed the religiosity of the event, the gently flowing river and the many birds flying around. See more..

Madhura temple is an age old ganpathi temple famous for it's ganpathi idol which is claimed to grow taller with every passing year. The temple is quite old and was undergoing restoration when we visited it. The temple architecture is very unique with it's unique dome. The idol can be viewed from outside the main dome. There are a lot of smaller temples within the complex. The temple has a very calming effect on you as you walk within the premises and watch the old architecture within the complex. Once you are in, go directly to the main temple and offer prayers. You would see long queues within but they are mainly for the prasadam which is very famous. A temple worth visiting. See more..

I have reviewed this temple in 2018. I recently visited and found that they do a nice puja. When you buy the archanai (puja) plate, it has a silver colour whip (used by Lord Krishna as the charioteer). This whip is placed in the hand of the Lord and then your archanai (puja) is done. They also have parais (containers) in which you can offer 5 different items like paddy, jaggery, poha, etc to the Lord. You have to fill the parais (containers) with these items until they overflow, so that you have overflowing prosperity, good health, etc in your life. You can also offer for go (cow) puja. See more..

Parassinikadavu Muthappan Madappura is a Hindu temple, located on the banks of the Valapattanam river about 16 km from Kannur. Unlike other temples, the devotees can 'interact' with the God as they pour out their grievances in a free-wheeling 'chat' with the tastefully decorated "Muthappan Theyyam," an artist who assumes 'divinity' by representing the God. The mythology goes that the Great Saint Adisankara while travelling to Mukambika was asked to stop at this location and erect a temple for the Devi. Poomodal, Divasa pooja are prominent ones here. You may have to wait for 30 years to get the poomodal pooja done for your family. Muttirakkal which means breaking the coconut in front of the Devi is a ritual which will give panacea for your ailments and problems. This deity is very powerful which is why there are serpentine queues during holi days. Avoid tuesdays and fridays, you will get very good glimpse of the goddess and may she give you all the support. I went to Muzhakkunnu on a Wednesday evening and stayed overnight at Mrudangashyly Inn which is at walkable distance from the temple. Visited the temple twice, once in the evening at 5 pm when the temple reopens and again in the morning. Being a working day, it was not crowded. The temple staff are extremely courteous and helpful. I am an ardent devotee of Devi Mrudanga Saileswari and this is my second visit to the temple. The inn is the only option to stay at least within two kilometers. The place is safe for women travellers to stay. (We were two women). The inn provides food (to be told in advance). Tea and coffee vending machines are available in the premises. Both AC and non AC rooms are available at the inn. Non AC and AC dormitories are also available. A Pazhassi Raja museum is coming up near the temple, not yet operational.
