Lembah Bujang Archaeological Museum, Kedah, Malaysia

4.5 (34 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Merbok History Museums

Wonderful historical asset within one and a half hours of Penang

Anyone interested in prehistory will love the museum at Merbok, as well as the 1st century jetty and 4th century iron ore smelting sites at Sungai Batu, 10 kms short of the Merbok museum. (See Wikipedia entry for Bujang Valley for historical summary.) The museum is small but well maintained and material is well presented. (Ignore any negative comments you may see elsewhere.) The sites are not that well sign posted on Tollway or feeder roads, and surprisingly not well known in Penang. Download a copy of the map in attached photos to show your driver. From Georgetown, it takes about one and a half hours each way to Merbok outside Penang peak hours.

    Setting imagination spinning
A tiny wooden sign saying "museum" on the way from Sungai Petani to Kuala Kedah was the only clue that for almost 2000 years traders from Arabia to China passed through the bead makers of bustling city of "Langasouka," travelling into the mountains, by river, and out by river to Patani, instead of taking on sea pirates and taxes in the Straits of Malacca. Pieces of their temples, and things they left are stored in two fascinating galleries with no entry fee. Did the young sailor from India whose prayer for a safe voyage is carved in stone ever make it back? Who ate the oysters fused in the shells fused into Chinese plates? Buddhist and Hindu relics predating Islam are not things you expect to see -and there they are! Four kilometres south of the museum a new area of easily accessible temples has been opened. Well worth a side trip from the monotony of the tollway to Alor Setar, and acessible by bus from Sungai Petani too.

    Lembah Bujang,,,come and visit
If you travel and exit at Sungai Petani's exit,,keep the direction and follow the route to this archaeological museum located at the place known as Bujang Valley situated at the foot of the highest Kedah's peak, named Gunung Jerai. If the journey is a little bit time-consuming, never mind take the chance to view the countryside with greens and typical locals settlements. If you happened to have visited the Borobudur at Jogyakarta, Indonesia and the Angkor Wat at Cambodia, then you not only be surprised that this Lembah Bujang was built approximately during that time also. The only dissapointment is that this Bujang Valley is not as popular as the other 2 monuments, whereby when tourists visited that 2 countries, it is a must for them to visit to such places. Suggestions : 1. This complex should be developed, say maybe with a private partnership like those 2 countries. When you robe in the private sectors, they will work for its success. 2. Map out the road for a tourists to visit. Make it a must in their programmes. The tourisme fraternity should organize a seminars/conferences to highlight this place by inviting the respected scholars on heritage to table their papers. Later promote it. 3. Upgrade infrastructures leading to the complex : roads/buildings/or other basic amenities. The government should start do it now and not letting the times buried all the treasures here due to lackadaisical attitudes by the authorities that was entrusted to look after it.
