River with many sights

The Muar River is the river that flows through Maur in particular, is the northern bounds of the touristy district of Pekan Muar. The mouth of the river is also just to the west of the touristy part of Muar. The river itself is not all that attractive, but it still retains some of the old world charms as it’s historically a fishing town. The fishing boats are still docked here, just to the east of the Sultan Ismail Bridge and next to the bus terminal. The nice thing about the river is the picturesque esplanade along which sits many of the attractive landmark buildings of the city such as Tanjung Emas park, Masjid Jamek Sultan Ibrahim, Istana Bandar Diraja Muar, Bangunan Sultan Abu Bakar and the aforementioned bridge.

    Muar River
Muar was a fishing village and is still fishing coastal town. The fresh catches from the Straits of Melaka and the surrounding regions landed in Muar throughout the day especially in the morning. Muar has another name, it is called Bandar Maharani, Bandar diRaja, a town fit for the King or Sultan of Johor. It is as old as the Straits Settlements of Melaka, Penang and Singapore. In fact the then sultan fled from Melaka and landed in Muar. Thanks to the Muar river which connect Melaka and Muar via Straits of Melaka. Unfortunately, this sea route has not been exploited by any big investor to open up the tourism industry in Muar. Muar can be connected by sea route to Batam in Indonesia and perhaps to Pulau Besar and even Melaka again. There was an attempt by the previous government to deepen the estuary to cater for the tourist boats and private vessel to dock at the estuary which open out to the Straits of Melaka. It is vast opportunities to bring in tourists from cruise ships to come to this historical town , which still retained many of its narrow streets and historical buildings. Muar river offer a great deal of opportunities awaiting to be explored.

There are some historical buildings besides the river. At night, parts of it are nicely lighted. You also take a river cruise.
