Lake Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico

4.5 (1.107 reviews) Spent Ranking #2 in Chapala Bodies of Water

Great trip to the lake

This volcanic crater lake is Mexico’s largest lake and is loved for its wealth of outdoor activities, especially its public balnearios (thermal pools). Go kayaking, have a picinic, or even take a boat ride to Mezcala or Alacranes, one of the islands within the lake. In the evening, head to Chapala’s Malecón to catch the breathtaking sunset. The nearby Ajijic is also a good spot for foodies who want to sample delicious Mexican-Asian fusion, Spanish cuisine, or even pizza. If you’re on a tour of Guadalajara, Lake Chapala is typically included in the itinerary and makes for a great day trip destination. – Tripadvisor

    Some tips and thoughts
I live in Jocotepec, a lakeside community, part-time. By far, it is the people and peaceful surroundings. Lots of places, food, activities. Rapidly growing ex-pat community. Best to visit in rainy season, July to September, when it is greener, more fresh fruit.....

Chapala and Ajijic make good escapes from the city
Both Chapala town, and Ajijic (much smaller, an enclave of expats) make good escapes from the frantic pace of Guadalajara city. Both towns have promenades along the lake, from where you can admire the birds. The lake looks muddy, not the blue water color you see in some pictures though, but the views of the surrounding hills are pleasant. Along the Ajijic promenade there is some shade. In Chapala, the vendors lined their stalls in the shade, but the promenade itself is in full sun. The time I was there in January, the temperature was perfect (mid-70F). You can cover both Ajijic and Chapala town in an easy day trip from Guadalajara on the public bus. Ajijic is only about 15 min bus ride from Chapala, and a little over 1 hr from Guadalajara.
