Beautiful old Adriatic town

Narrow alleys and passages; old and traditional buildings; bars, konobas and small restaurants popping out in most unexpected places; great sunset views; great walks throughout the city and always there is something new to discover. One of the jewels of Istra, must visit place. - on the down side, it is in high demand with tourists and visitors, so it is not cheap.

    Early morning is Best
The place is stunning and it’s history fascinating. If you can get up early because you get super light on the buildings and the harbour and there are few tourists. We were nearly an hour away but got to the parking soon after 08.30. Even the main market was just setting up and opening. We followed our excellent guide book up past the various buildings in the old town, admired the Church at the top and were able to see the harbour before it comes to life. Just one fishing boat unloading its catch. By soon after 10.00 the place was beginning to buzz with hardly a harbour side seat free. It is very picturesque but after a fine fish lunch we glad of that early start and left. We were glad we decided to stay up in the hills and not here. It’s very pressurised.

Photogenic Venetian town with narrow alleys, courtyards, panelled doors and grated windows
We only had a couple of hours in Rovinj, but it definitely is a place I'd like to return to visit the next time we are in Croatia. From the harbour, Rovinj rises on a steep hill to the church of St Euphemia. Once an island, you enter through arched gates into a square which is dominated by a dark pink clocktower with a carved winged lion just below the face. Along the water front are cafes and restaurants; Rovinj is famous for its iced coffee which means coffee, ice, ice cream and whip cream. The old island would have been surrounded by the sea and you can still see the old fishermen and traders water gates used to unload directly into the warehouses. Once you enter the town, the streets narrow quickly and begin to climb towards the church. Along the way, you can look into tiered courtyards, with panelled and carved doors, grated windows, and flowers everywhere. There are lots of shops showing art work, crafts, jewelry, and restaurants and cafes. Here and there you can watch artists working on their paintings. The church is located in a large square surrounded by a low wall on 3 sides with vies along the coat. Inside you will find the sarcophagus of St. Euphemia which somehow miraculously made its way here from Constantinople after it was endangered by one of the regimes.
