    All part of the visit
The Balbi Arch leads to the old town and is the gateway through the narrow cobbled streets. Built in 1679 it is an excellent piece of architecture with beautiful carvings.

    Gateway to the Old Town
In medieval times, Rovinj was surrounded by walls and gates, which were demolished under Venetian rule (1283-1797).The gateway to the old town is through the Balbi Arch, erected in 1680 on the site of the outer town gate. The arch is decorated with the carved head of a Turk on the outer wall. The inner wall contains the carved head of a Venetian. Over the arch is the Balbi family coat of arms and the Lion of St Mark, the symbol of Venice. Certainly worth a photograph on your way up to St Euphemia's church
