My place to go to walk my dog

This is a nice family state park convient and nice playground. My children use to enjoy fishing and ice skating in the ponds. Sadly the viaduct broke 4 years ago so no water in the ponds or parts of the canal. Can't walk to downtown from the I and m canal anymore which is sad. Wish they would fix it. I take my dog there for a walk every day

    Small, off of Old Stage
This is a small state park off of Old Stage Road. You basically take Jefferson which turns into Fremont heading west until you see the dead end sign, turn left there and it's around 1250' down on your left. The park has a small fishing pond, and is adjacent to the Illinois and Michigan Canal. There is a gravel walking path which is comfortable for walking or bike riding. There are bathrooms, and no other amenities (like a shop), but if you want something, you can go to the downtown area a mile or so east, and you have a wide variety there. Picnic tables are available. It's a nice place to stop to take a walk, or ride your bike.

    Give me a sign
Make sure you have a GPS with you to visit this park. There are signs about every block directing you through the west side of Morris, but none right before the actual park. I drove several miles on west before turning around and coming back. When we got back to the park on the right (east) I realized why i had missed it. The big wood sign at the entrance is blank! I don't know if they took down a metal to sign to repaint or what, but they should have put up a temporary sign of some sort of temporary sign to let you know where you are. That's kind of standard practice for public lands. Park restrooms were still open in November but the information center was closed for the season and no one was around. Also, we started to walk east towards downtown but the I& M canal trail is closed off, along both banks, no explanation, no alternate route posted . We could have walked to the west but I had already seen more than I intended to in that direction so we tried to walk around the tent camping area and get back on the canal path but grounds were really muddy so we weren't able to reconnect to the trail. We just got back in the car and drove the short distance (about a mile) to the downtown and Stratton State park. It's a shame because the park is good sized, scenic and fairly secluded for being right on the edge of town. It is one of the chain of parks along the canal, at least providing parking and access in one direction and is dog friendly I just don't understand why the park sign is MIA. The state might as well put up one saying "Visitors Not Welcome."
