Running full force, spectacular.

What a great show. We purchased tickets for the the light show. They may have over sold because there was an enormous crowd however organizers managed the traffic well. I’m sure glad we had a handicap plaqard as my mom is elderly and unable to walk distances. The light show was pretty. We decided to come back in the early morning 8:00 AM to see the falls in daylight. I’m glad we did. Only a few people were there, we had the place to ourselves and the falls were spectacular.

Get Off the Highway and Take the Detour to See These Falls
After reading that Shoshone Falls was considered the Niagra of the West, we decided to finally take the detour off the highway and go see these falls. Conveniently located near Twin Falls, ID allowing for other stops as well (plenty of hotels, restaurants, shopping, etc,), the falls are actually in a city park so there is no admission fee. The drive in is a bit winding but doable for most vehicles. There was plenty of free parking with restrooms and picnic areas also available. There are a number of viewing stations that provide spectacular photos. We were there in March and did not see the water flow seen in the photo. I am not sure if that is because the water is being restricted or if there is just less water, but the rock formations are impressive in and of themselves.

    Beautiful Falls, Nice viewing areas
On our way home to Utah from a trip to Ketchum Idaho, we stopped at Twin Falls Idaho, to go see Shoshone Falls, on the Snake River. The falls are located just northeast of the city of Twin Falls. We had to trust our GPS to find it, as the route to get there isn’t well marked. This is a natural waterfall, enhanced with a dam to facilitate a hydroelectric plant. The flow of the falls varies seasonally depending on spring runoff amounts, and the irrigation, industrial and the hydroelectric needs for the water. When we saw it, the water level was termed “moderately low”, but was still quite impressive and beautiful. The geology in itself is quite interesting. I would like to return there when the water level is high to get the full effect. The views down the river are quite pretty, and there are trails that you can walk to get different views of the area. There is a free view area above, but its well worth the $5 per car to go down below to the park with the nice view areas and trails.
