Very interesting museum

This museum is really worth a visit. Prior to entering inside I was a bit skeptical. Actually the only reason why I was into visiting, was because it was too hot outside. I was searching for a cool place. Rather than going to a shopping mall I have preferred visiting this museum. My visit went beyond my expectations. I thought the most beautiful museums in China are in Beijing and Xi'an only but I was wrong. This is really very nice. The main attraction is Xin Zhui's cadaver that has been exceptionally preserved. Bear in mind two things though. The museum is closed on Monday. Secondly you need to book your ticket well in advance as this museum attracts thousands of visitors every day. When I arrived at the entrance I was refrained from entering. I tried to persuade the customer service to let me in. I justified myself by saying I didn't know anything about the number of visitors allowed to enter. In the end they kindly turned a blind eye and let me in.

    LADY DAI
Foreigners to remember to take their passports with. The museum is impeccable. Maybe eat something before you start as there is a lot to see. Security is everywhere and especially watch the foreigners near the more valuable and rare objects, and also near the tomb of Lady Dai as no photography is to be taken there. They watch the foreigners very carefully and so we did not attempt to take pics there. All else we could photograph. The history of Changsha and Hunan province in general are well documented and the beautiful detail of all the artifacts buried with Lady Dai's was equisite and very well preserved. Give yourself a number of hours if you wish to see all the rooms in detail.

    Hunan Culture and A Tomb!
This museum was a great jaunt, offering a variety of things to see from photography, to ceramics and pottery, to paintings and scrolls, to the excavated treasures from a famous local tomb. The museum is supposed to be free but we were forced to pay 50RMB for the featured exhibition which happened to be a focused history of education and religion in Hunan and China (a point of pride in Changsha due to the famous Yuelu Academy). The exhibit ended up being well worth seeing with lots of paintings of famous philosophers and deities. The photography exhibit about the landscapes and minority cultures in Hunan were a welcome delight. The highlight was definitely the mummified remains of Lady Dai, the wife of a local dignitary from centuries ago. The corpse is incredibly well preserved and is on full display through many panels of glass. All of the items that she and her family were buried with are on display as well, as is the actual tomb structure, which has been moved to the museum and offers a unique presentation for the whole exhibit. You will want to leave at least 3 hours if you plan on seeing everything in the museum and reading the descriptors (about half of which are in English).
