4.5Schloss Wilhelmshohe(407 reviews) - Schloss Wilhelmshohe Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Castles
This museum has one of the best collections of Dutch Golden Age paintings. It's been long on my list to visit. The third floor dedicated mainly to Hals and Rembrandt. There are two small portraits by Hals listed as property of State Art Collections Kassel but this time they were on display at Wilhelmshohe, nice surprise.See more..
Sometimes a guide makes te visit, we had one! `the Schloss is beautiful, but with the help of the guide we learned a lot of details about the rule of the 'Fürst bishops' who once ruled Fulda. Furthermore you learn about the barok architecture. For little money you get a 2 hour tour through the Schloss and the town. The language was German. (I don't know if its also available in English)See more..
4.0Löwenburg Castle(199 reviews) - Quite an investment for a mistress and to show off as a Landgrave Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Castles
A romantic mock-medieval castle build in the late 18th century is featuring the style of a much older medieval knight's castle. You can only visit alongside a tour. Usually crowds are small, so do not worry. However, inform yourself ahead on tour schedules. A beautiful sight not to be missed! The castle was build bySee more..
4.5Schloss Braunfels(194 reviews) - This is real life history, and art, and hospitality! Tuesday: 8:30 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Castles
Wellcome to Braunfels Castle! It looks a bit like in a fairy tale, but it is real. Located on the very top of a rock it wellcomes its guests from far. Since centuries its owned by the family, which is still living there. Braunfels is a charming little place with the huge castle right in the middle of it. Braunfels Castle itself offers an attractive variety of sightseeing possibilities, which however are a bit limited in wintertime (Nov.- March). Enjoy your stay in Braunfels!See more..
3.5Burg Frankenstein Restaurant and Events(187 reviews) - Who could pass on visiting Frankenstein's Castle?! Tuesday: 11:00 AM - 9:00 PM Architectural Buildings • Castles
Had to bring my daughter. When we moved to Germany in 1969, the first weekend we were there, my Dad took me to the castle. I was a 9 year old Frankenstein addict. So, it was a huge surprise when we came up the road and saw the sign. I wanted my daughter to experience it too. So much has been restored since 1969. There is lots of information. I would never come to Germany and be anywhere close to this castle, without taking the time to come. It's a must for anyone who grew up watching Frankenstein movies. But, the story here is different, but just as interesting, And, it's not fiction. ❤️See more..
My 20 year old daughter and I visit the castle, the castle park and the „Weißer Turm“ on 6/2/22. We were very fortunate to have a private tour of the beautifully restored rooms of the last German Kaiser Wilhelm II and his wife. After the tour that lasted about 50 minutes we paid an additional fee at the visitor center to access the Weißer Turm. It was a clear day and we enjoyed the view from the top.See more..
4.0Stadtschloss City Palace Fulda(159 reviews) - Feel the history of one of old Palace Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Castles

We visited this castle at night. They have a jousting show with live horses and fire. It was very fun with great costumes. It is done outside the castle with bench seating. Reservations for the shows are accepted and encouraged. They only do the shows during the summer months ending in September. The show has comedy and is all in German. It is appropriate for all ages. The castle also had a banquet area for parties or receptions and I saw they also have entertainment for this. There is also a restaurant that was very nice with indoor and outdoor seating. . We only had dessert and wine. We did some exploring of the castle with a flashlight. There is a nice view over looking the town. The castle is beautifully lit with spot lights at night. I have been here during the day and it is a nice old castle to visit.See more..
4.5Burg Ronneburg(116 reviews) - One of the best castles in Germany Tuesday: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Castles
The Ronneburg castle is a real treasure and worth a visit if you love the medieval history. The castle commands a high position and is visible for miles from all directions. My estimate is a 30-40 minute drive from Frankfurt. There is ample parking and also a wonderful restaurant. Allow at least 2 hours to explore the main castle which charges a small entrance fee. For amazing views climb to tower and if you want to learn how even the quietest person was made to talk check out the torture chambers. There is also a very deep water hole, the emergency water supply for the castle and a falcon show. Several times a year the local Ronneburg association put on a weekend where the entire castle is moved back in time and patriots come in dressed in medieval clothing. The restaurant offers an array of castle feasts on select days. Comfortable shoes are recommended. A must to visit.See more..
4.5Weilburg Castle(116 reviews) - Excellent and peculiar castle Castles
Excellent and peculiar castle. Only Versailles comes to mind as a rough analogy. Besides the castle, the complex includes church, orangery and park. The courtyard has chairs, there are concerts under the open sky. There is a restaurant and hotel - in fact, quite inexpensive. From the train station you should walk about 15-20 minutes, then a little uphill over the bridge past the entrance gate with a preserved tower. By the way, another interesting castle in Braunfels is in just 12 kilometers from here. In another direction a little further is situated Runkel castlel, and after 6 kilometers Limburg with its famous half-timbered buildings. The only serious drawback - without joining a guided tour you can't get in, but all the tours are usually in German.See more..
What a nice hike. Most of the time it’s a flat terrain until you get to the castle where you’ll need to walk an incline. The castle only has the walls, it’s a ruin so there is no furniture so if you are looking for a completely renovated place this is not for you, but if you are looking to enjoy a lovely town with great restaurants and a beautiful Castle with magnificent views you’ll love it. We love Königstein and it’s only a short drive from Frankfurt. See more..
4.0Residenzschloss Arolsen(87 reviews) - Great place to visite worthwhile making a detour Tuesday: Spent 1-2 hours Castles
I was not to close to this castle but saw it from far in the past. Having seen this castle in tha past made me do a detour and it was worth ever minute of the detour. Guide was great, open for questions and very Knowledgeable. Rooms are beautifull with a lot of history as they still look like they did >65 years a go. One has to wear some slippers, inside the rooms after the stairs, over the shoes to preffent damage of the old floor, or is this just to polish the floor. All in all great place with a link to Dutch history as well. Show your Sauerland card and you'll get a small discount. I forgot mine and still had the discount. Very friendly.See more..

4.5Schloss Philippsruhe(76 reviews) - all in one museum Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Castles
It was free to entry on International Museum Day (22 May 2016). The Schloss museum offers far more than expected !! Worth visiting! The museum inside consists of : history & treasure of the royal family, paper screen play museum, gallery to show modern art (it was architect Claus Bury when i visited ), general people 's lives in modern times.....There were so much to see that it takes u half day. What i like the most about the museum is the royal garden around is free entry and u can cycle, picnic or simply chill there. Also it is right next to River Main, u have the great view and many people come here to take wedding photos or organize their wedding parties.See more..
There were so many things we enjoyed about our time here. It was by far our favourite castle in the area. It wins hands down on several points. When we visited, there was the most delicious food available from the welcoming staff at the Grill Hut. The views from the castle over the lakes are to die for - especially on a sunny day, as it was when we visited. So, currywurst and chips downed, we entered the museum! You can have an audio tour which was essential and a rare thing on our castle tour of Hesse. It's a great castle - especially if you like medieval torture methods. The staff here were lovely and very kind to our children. Make sure you see what's at the bottom of the well!See more..
Whenever we have visitors, my daughter wants to bring them here. It's all in German, but as it is a museum of doing rather than reading, you can watch other people and figure out what's going on. They will also do tours in English for kid groups. It's a museum of the senses, and is a lot of fun. It's rather expensive, though. My daughter's favorite part is the dark maze. Don't miss the activities outdoors, too. There is a little barefoot trail that's lots of fun. The cafe inside is limited, but there are sausages and sandwiches in the little food shack out back.See more..
4.0Schloss Berlepsch(65 reviews) - Not bad, little bit tourist unfriendly Spent 2-3 hours Castles
The cheatau itself lies in very beautiful nature, which I very appreciated, because I like photographing. Also the courtyard is very nice. But I don't understand the system of guided tours. There was a big afternoon break, which caused that we could not see anything inside and only tower tour was available. There was a lack of information about it. Although I found out from the cook that it is scheduled on 4pm, nobody appeared at that time. Maybe I did something wrong and it is my fault, but I seriously recommend to check opening times before visit.See more..
4.0Schloss Friedrichstein(63 reviews) - Lovely tea and hot chocolate with wonderful views Castles
Overlooking Bad Wildungen, the Schloss is a great place to visit. Yes, this is where Princess Margaret was killed, which is what the Grimm brothers used to base the story of Snow White on - definitely something worth asking the cafe staff about. Go through the courtyard to the far end where you'll find a little cafe. Order your food and drinks (the choice of dark, milk or white hot chocolate sets a benchmark), then go up to the terrace and enjoy the views. It's almost magical. We never went to see the inside of the castle itself, so not sure if it's worth seeing.See more..
I love castles and ruins, and If you are able to get off the beaten track and travel to Greifenstein, (there are many castles nearby) I really enjoyed Greifenstein. There is a clock museum and you can go up one of the towers. There is an incredible view of the surrounding area, and it is just an interesting place because most of it is not intact so it lets the imagination run wild with what it used to be. The restaurant there is really really good too, I recommend trying the smoked fish plate. It was amazing.See more..
The castle was closed for renovations, but the rose garden was open and free to visit. I found this old courtyard transformed in a garden exceptional beautiful. So many different kind of roses in all colours. If you are going to Eltville in the summertime, don't miss it. See more..
Hirschhorn is my favorite town on the bike ride from Heidelberg up the Neckar. It looks like it should be the set for a Disney movie (but unlike Neuschwanstein, the stuff here is actually from olden times, not from a mad, revisionist king). And Schoss Hirschhorn is one of the better castle ruins. When I visited one Tuesday in April 2016 the restaurant attached to the castle was closed, but they left the gate to the tower open. If you are up for climbing 7 flights of narrow stairs (after having ascended the hill to get to this castle) the view would be worth it, even if it were not free.See more..
4.0Friedberg Castle(54 reviews) - Castle tower is fun to explore Castles
For a small fee, we all climbed to the top of the castle tower. This is the only castle I've visited, so I can't say how it compares in terms of transporting you to another time, but it was definitely cool to see in real life some of the functional architectural features from a rather dangerous time period. Seeing and touching a very old building is something I appreciate since the US doesn't have that. The tower gives you a great view of Freidberg and the grounds are pretty.See more..

Came here with my three year old and my mother. This is a guided tour only access castle, like most. They do a normal tour, about 1 hour, and a kids tour. We took the normal tour and kept our three year old away from all the pretty things. She was so excited to see where the "princesses" slept and ate and danced. Very beautiful castle, rokoko style with lots of plated gold ornaments and beautiful fabrics. Worth a visit if you are around. Admission is reasonable. Do not go to the schlosshotel, they had terrible service and bad coffee, we went there after the tour. The castle is very cold, no heating, so dress warm if you are going in wintertime. There are no elevators or personal lifts so you need to be able to walk. No prams allowed. See more..

4.5Burg Eppstein(26 reviews) - Much more than a ruin Spent 1-2 hours Castles
We visited and were told the castle was open but the museum was closed. Then we encountered the Ritter Ulrich. His tales of the castle were fascinating and incredibly thorough. He asked if we would like to see his medieval musical instrument. He opened the museum door and invited us in. He played his "hurdy gurdy" that he had made himself beautifully and continued telling stories of the castle and the town. The views from the castle are beautiful but the highlight for us had to be Ulrich!See more..

4.5Schloss Heiligenberg(15 reviews) - Perfect place to take a rest or start a hike Spent 1-2 hours Castles
Along the Bergstrasse there are quite some castles. What makes Schloss Heiligenberg different is that it is easier to access than most. You can drive by car up to the carpark but as it is not really at the top of the Odenwald mountain chain it is quite walkable from Jugendheim itself. It's a lovely place giving you some quite unknown insight into european history of the late 1800's (the russia-house hosting a little museum opens as 14:00). But maybe even nicer is the cafe in the castle's courtyard serving a late breakfast and some nice "Kaffee und Kuchen". From the castle there are a couple of one to two hour walks.See more..

3.5Burg Eisenberg(10 reviews) - Foundations only Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Castles
Burg Eisenberg is a ruin of a so-called ‘Höhenburg’ (hill castle) on the top of the Eisenberg (about 562 meters above sea level). The ruin consists only of the foundations of the former structure, but gives a good impression of the original lay-out of the castle. The moat is still there. Next to the castle ruin stands the lookout tower Georg-Viktor-Turm and gives a good view on the ruins.See more..
Das Schloss Fürstenau ist ein Komplex aus mehreren Gebäuden - und ich fand es überraschend groß, vor allem mit den ganzen dazugehörigen Wirtschaftsgebäuden und anderen Gebäuden. 4.5Schloss Steinau(8 reviews) - Beautiful Castle, Focused on Telling Brothers Grimm History Spent 1-2 hours Castles
This is a large castle belonging to the Graf of Hanau built in the early 1500's. Today you can tour it for a small fee (3.50 euro/adult) going through many rooms which are displaying many items from the Grimm Family. Throughout much of the displays there are English translations. The displays focus on the whole family and tell their stories but obviously they dedicate much to the more famous brothers, Jacob, Wilhelm and the younger artist brother Ludwig.
