Great Wall at Jiaoshan, Hebei, China

4.5 (34 reviews) Spent Ranking #7 in Qinhuangdao Ancient Ruins

The "First Mountain" that the Great Wall ascends up from where it meets the Bohai Sea in the East.

Restored in the early 1990's, this piece of wall is approximately 10 kilometers inland and accessible by public transport (bus). Chairlift runs from the base to the top. Views to the ocean from the top and no crowds.

    China and Tibet Combined
This was done with Smithsonian Travels. Getting into Tibet is often 'dicey' but with Smithsonian it was easy. We had to get a Visa to enter China and they stated we needed six (6) blank pages in our passports. We only had five so had to get new passports. Of course, their Visa only took up one page!! The only downside. Smithsonian had a China PhD expert from Washington, DC, along for the entire trip. She supplemented the local guides and gave voluntary lectures on food, climate, geography, history, war, etc. -- all most informative and valuable. The tour was a giant counter clockwise circle. Beijing, Great Wall, Xian (Terra Cotta Soldiers - worth the trip alone), Lasha Tibet, Panda Preserve, 3 day cruise on Yangtzee and finish in Shanghai. A long 20 days but stunning to see how so many people live in such proximity to one another. "small villages" had over 1 million people in each one. Highly recommend.

Best section of The Great Wall in Qinhuangdao
This was the Third Section of the Great Wall we visited during a day trip to Qinhuangdao and it was by far the best. All the tourists had gone to the two easier sections of the wall which left it almost deserted. There are some challenging parts that are rather steep. Even one area where you have to go up and down ladders to get to the next part. There is a pathway that follows the wall which is easier to traverse if you cannot deal with steep staircases. We had some challenges getting here. Several locals in the city center told us this section wasn't open and a taxi driver even took us to the wrong section. I am not sure if there is public transportation that goes to this section but it is about a 10RMB ride from the city center of Shanhuaigan. Bring lots of water, especially in summer as it is quite hot climbing the stairs.
