Eight Outer Temples in The Bishu Villa, Hebei, China
4.5 (76 reviews) Thursday: 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM Spent Ranking #4 in Chengde Beach & Pool Clubs
Definately worth travelling to visit these superb temples
The 8 temples are easily reached by taxi from central Chengde - 10 -15mins at most. Entrance fees are a standard 80RmB but the tickets usually cover two or more temples as long as you visit them on the same day. The bigger temples have lots of Chinese tour parties so they can be crowded and noisy. The earlier in the day you visit the better. Allow a morning or afternoon for each temple. When we visited (Oct 2011) two of the smaller temples (Pu Ren & An Yuan temples) were closed for restoration.

Very nice to walk around on a hot summer day
The Outer Temples are accessible from Chengde by a normal city bus (118 if I remember correctly) for 1 yuan, if you don't mind the 500m walk from the bus stop up the road where the first temple is, and then walking from one to the other. We had a picture map of the are which we had bought the previous day from a woman outside the Summer Palace. It had both English and Chinese writing, and was very useful in our walking around. We only made it to four temples in one day, which was plenty. There weren't too many people in three out of four, a bonus. The tickets usually cover two temples, which is nice. A lot of them were being renovated and covered in scaffolding, though, so we didn't get to see as much as we thought we would. It was still worth it, though.

lots of nice temples...
There are many temples surrounding the summer palace. We only visited two of them (Puning and Putuo Zongcheng) for lack of time. They are all only a few minutes drive from each other. The areas are very beautiful although a bit overpriced. I suggest doing the temples in the morning and leaving the whole afternoon for the palace.
