Chilkat State Park, Alaska, United States

5.0 (22 reviews) Spent 2-3 hours Ranking #15 in Haines State Parks

Great views!

Getting there required going over a gravel road full of very deep potholes then going down a very steep hill with sharp switch back turns. Twice as bad coming back out. Use 4 wheel drive (if you have it ) to make the climb easier through all the large ruts. The view of rainbow glacier was worth it! Be sure to go in the morning so the sun is on the glacier for great pictures.

Amazing mountain, glacier and ocean views
We had a little time left before dark, so we drove out from Haines past Mud Bay (prettier than it sounds) to see Chilkat State Park. The road switched to gravel and then to a very steep 15% grade winding down the hill. If I were towing anything I'd be sure to use low gear. I'm an Alaskan and am used to great scenery, but this blew us away even in near darkness. Incredible jagged mountain peaks towered over us with multiple glaciers a enormous waterfalls flowing across the bay. This is the kind of scenery people travel to extreme locations to see...and it's only about 20 minutes from the ferry terminal!

    Maybe America's Most Spectacular Campground
You may have camped in some pretty great places, but Chilkat State Park, located near the southern end of Chilkat Peninsula south of Haines, Alaska, is absolutely fabulous. The campsites are spacious and tree-sheltered, set far enough apart to offer privacy. There is beach access, a boat ramp, hiking opportunities, AND a breathtaking view of glacier-draped peaks, waterfalls, and a narrow bay that is home to waterfowl, seals, and whales. This is a must-visit,
