Shenzhen Metro, Guangdong, China

4.5 (282 reviews) Spent Ranking #2 in Shenzhen Public Transportation Systems

Nice Clean Metro

The stations are well designed and it has been very quick to get around the city during our stay. We also liked the digital displays and clear instructions on most trains. We had plenty of room to sit on most trains throughout the day. It seems that metro cards and tokens are not being used and we had to use WeChat to use a mini program for the metro. Please note that they will ask for water bottles to be removed at many stations for inspection. We came into Shenzhen by train from Guangzhou and expected to get a 3 day pass or a card but they were not available. We ended going through a queue and stood near the x-ray machines setting up the mini program for ourselves. This only charges for each ride and the QR code must be scanned when entering and leaving metro areas. The QR code attached to this review will allow you to sign up for one prior to a trip to Shenzhen.

    Fast, efficient & inexpensive
Within China I generally take the subway in major cities, such as Shenzhen. It can be busy at rush hour times, which I tend to avoid by going before or after rush hour periods. Other users are mostly friendly. Subway cars are fairly new and clean. I buy metro cards which enable me to enter the system quickly, and I have download the metro App, which gives me the estimate travel time by the routes available.

Exact, on time, clean, easy to handle...
The Shenzen Metro is the easiest and fastest commuter throughout the megalopolis. You'll find ticket machines in every station. Select "english" on the touch-screen, find the whole Metro-network depicted. A tap on a region where you want to go will zoom-in so you can select your destination accurately. The Ticket machine shows you the amount due ( normally 3 Yuan = 0,50€), pay and collect your green plastic token. Entering: slide token over the arrow at the gate. door will open. Keep the token! Exit: drop the token into the slit and wait (behind the yellow line!!!) for the gate to open. (You can also buy a commuter card for several days. Personell in the stations is friendly and will help you). Then proceed through the safety check like in European airports. Don't carry knives, scissors or other possibly (might be) noxious things in your baggage! It will be confiscated! Show bottles of water or other liquids to the security personell! Stations are announced in Chinese and (good) English. No Worry! Metro Stations are extremely clean and people are advised to be extremely disciplined (and so should you as a tourist). No running, no hustling, no pushing... just line up quietly and whenever you perceive a yellow line: don't cross it! There's lots of Security Staff in every station and on every platform. And you will see "security advice" permanently on the screens in the stations and in the wagons. Just keep cool, submit yourself under the paranoia and travel safely and on time!
