Abbey Museum, Grevenmacher District, Luxembourg

3.5 (6 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #17 in Echternach Speciality Museums

A very smart and interesting museum.

The Museum of the Abbey is situated in the basement of the Abbey. It is just round the corner from the Basilica and is well worth a visit. The musem is situated in the vaulted cellars of the former abbey and is mainly dedicated to the Echternach scriptorium. In the Middle Ages, the scriptorium of the Echternach abbey was one of the most important in Europe and the museum contains facsimiles of medieval manuscripts as well as a good video presentation of how they were made. There is also a wealth of information about the life of St Willibrord and his journeys.

facsimile of differing qualities of manuscripts written here
This is a fairly small museum, showcasing facsimile of some of the manuscripts the monks of the abbey wrote and decorated long time ago. The facsimile are of differing quality, there is little information, and none in English.
