Musée de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, Grand Terre, New Caledonia

4.5 (167 reviews) Spent Ranking #4 in Noumea Speciality Museums

Interesting history lesson

A very interesting museum in the centre of Nouméa. Staff were friendly and fees were reasonable. The displays were in French but some were repeated in English. We were given an iPad to carry around which had a choice of languages to check for further details at different spots in the museum. Show plenty of time so you can read and absorb the different displays - we had to rush the second half as they were closing. Thus probably not very interesting for younger children! It includes world war ii history in general and specifically for New Caledonia -both of which are interesting.

    EXCELLENT LITTLE MUSEUM
Much more than military history, it outlines the transition of New Caledonia into the post imperial world through the presence of 50,000 Allied servicemen, mainly American, during WW2. There is enough English to follow the story, but “O level” French will help. The local Information Office said it was cash only for entry, but the museum now accepts cards. Entry costs very little, seniors for example, pay the equivalent of $1 US. There no cafe, neither gift shop, it is no frills, but well worth a visit.

    Fabulous museum
We popped in to this museum to have a look around and were thoroughly impressed. Although small, the layout and information gives you a really good insight in to the impact of the war on Noumea and New Caledonia. At 300xpf it's a very affordable way of whiling away a couple of hours in Noumea. Whilst there is a lot of content in French, there's more than enough in English (both on the displays and on the iPads) to understand. The member of staff was extremely efficient and helpful - and the toilet facilities were fabulous - with a great changing area for our 7 month old - many thanks!!!
