Satrangi Lake, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan

4.5 (12 reviews) Spent Ranking #12 in Hunza Bodies of Water

Awesome place to visit.

Satrangi lake is one of six lakes which are located in beautiful Naltar valley. The road towards lake is a 4x4 track and in pretty bad shape. On the way towards lake there are many breath taking views. Snow covered high peaks, lush green meadows, Pine trees and crystal clear water stream. As you reach the lake scene becomes more beautiful. The lake has many different colors. One will remember the place life time after visit.

    Simply Awesome...
Located 12 km (1 - 1.5 hours on jeep) from main Naltar Valley at altitudes varying from 10575 to 11350 ft above sea level are 5 small but strikingly beautiful lakes which the locals now call Satrangi Lakes. The first four lakes are approachable by a jeep but the fifth (the biggest as well as the highest lake) can only be approached on foot. The mud track leading to the lakes is very bumpy and at few places, one is literally driving on fairly large sized stones. Locals have old Willy Jeeps and the kind whose suspension systems have been strengthened to climb the stony roads. My driver told me that after every two trips, the jeep has to be taken to the workshop for maintenance. Taking own 4x4 vehicle is not advisable unless you are planning to get rid of it soon. But when you reach the first lake, its an awesome scene. The first lake has a natural spring sprouting at the bottom therefore the water is warm and there is lot of algae in it; hence the fresh green colour. The other three lakes are fed by natural springs. There water is much colder, has no algae in it and the colour is beautiful turquoise blue. The fifth and the biggest lake is fed by glacial streams and its water during summers is a bit greyish green which is typical of glacial fed lakes. At dawn and dusk however, the lakes present strikingly beautiful and unique shade, hence the name "Satrangi" which means "comprising of 7 colours". Its a full day trip from Naltar Valley. One can do it from Gilgit city as well but 3 hours would be added to overall timings. During summers, there are few kiosks established by the locals that provide basic food and snacks. Lot of people do camping along lake side. We observed that the visitors were throwing garbage around and we could detect lot of litter in the area. My request to all, please educate yourself, educate your children, take a garbage bag along and put all your waste stuff in it. Please try to maintain the natural beauty (and cleanliness) of the area.

    Naltar Lakes
Located at a distance of 40 Km from Gilgit city. It takes 2 hours to reach Naltar valley from Gilgit. The best season to visit Naltar Lake Satrangi Lake is May to October. In summer whole Naltar valley looks like a fairy land. The most prominent colors were blue, green and surprisingly, yellow, a color I had never seen before in a lake. There is also 2nd and third lake. Blue star lake and Firoza Lake. The distance from Rainbow Lake to blue star lake is Approximately 1 Km North of Rainbow Lake.
