extremely helpful

We dropped into the VVV on our first day in Zutphen. The lady was extremely helpful in suggesting things to do in Zutphen and surrounding towns and discussing short but pretty cycle routes to surrounding areas. They also have 2 very interesting pamphlets for self-guided walks in the town. One is on historical Zutphen, the other on hidden courtyards. each costs 2 euros. The VVV have regular city walks in Dutch. Unfortunately there were no tours in English in June, but we had a wonderful guided tour of the old city in English by a volunteer at the Stadswandeling Gilde. They have a website for booking walks.

The starting point to explore the area.
We stayed in Zutphen for four nights, looking for a quiet base from which to do some cycling in the area. We found the tourist information office to be an excellent starting point on arrival and were able to buy the necessary maps and be given good advice. We hired bikes from Profile Bleumink, Spittaalstraat 34 and found them to be of excellent quality. The staff were friendly and helpful. The town itself was bustling and busy but not overcrowded or touristy. A relaxing, authentic experience. We found that many local businesses (including the tourist office) did not take Mastercard Credit Cards.

    Cool Ambience
Driving through the Hanseatic town of Deventer we were introduced to the romantic town of Zutphen which we almost missed. Located at a height the Rijsmonument and the Library sets the stamp on the town. There are numerous side streets and alleyways to explore rather like a treasure hunt and the prize in the form of photo ops is worth it. As with many Dutch towns there is a large square dotted with cafes, shops and restaurants. Zutphen is cool and worth a half-day visit.
