Great solution for a rainy day

What to do when the skies open up? Go to Fort Asperen. You can walk around in the fort on your own. When you’re lucky there is a exposition of the local glass factory of Leerdam.

Great little fort with a long history
An hour well spent wandering through the fascinating history of the fort and seeing a spot of art. It is also worth visiting the nearby trench system and machine gun posts. The guy at the ticket office really sets the scene well so that you can soak up the story of the fort as it is presented during the visit.

    Art fortress
Fort Asperen dates from 1840-1860 and formed part of a defense structure. Today it serves as a stage for artists to present their work. There are a number of exhibitions during the summer months. At the time of our visit we were lucky to get a preview into a show of glass and light and of the cooking of tomorrow. We thought it was very inspirational. Many volunteers have put in a lot of hard work and shortly also the tavern will open. Both the fortress and the tavern are attractive. Fort Asperen is centrally located in the center of The Netherlands but it is a bit difficult to find. For anyone looking for both art and history off the beaten track however, the place is wonderful.
