One of our favourite art daytrips, YES it is really an ART Beautiful!!!

This edition of the Veluws Zandsculpturenfestijn "75 Years of Liberty" in Garderen, takes you back to the time of WWII. From the music to all the decorations, you really imagine yourself in the war years. In addition to important battles from WWII, such as the 'Battle of Arnhem' and 'D-Day', the liberation, the life of Anne Frank, our resistance heroes, the cartoons, Radio Oranje and the Royal House are also fully discussed. The sand sculptures of the 'Battle of Arnhem' and 'Pearl Harbor' (11 meters long and almost 5 meters high!) are truly impressive. Dioramas introduce you to a beautifully crafted, detailed wartime sand world in miniature, on a 1:5 scale. We visited yesterday, at the 10th of June 2021, you have to buy tickets online with a timelock upfront. Entrance fee € 10,00 p.p. It was closed during lockdown and reopened at the 5th of June 2021. We couldn't wait to go, one of our favourite days out

    Suprisingly impressive
Due to Covid, we decided to stay within our own country over the summer. We discovered some new places, including het Zandsculpturenfestijn. To be honest, I went in without many expectations. Our group consisted of four 20-something friends, so it was a different activity than we might have gone too if everything was open and safe. Having said that, we had a lovely time at the exhibition. I was surprised by how large it was. When we were there, there were two main exhibitions. The first one, about World War II, was really impressive. All of us have studied history, so the information wasn't necessarily new to us, but it was really interesting to see the different depictions of various events and people. Each sculpture has a sign with some more background information. The information was really extensive. The second exhibition consisted of sculptures that each represented a different city. We had a blast trying to figure it out. Some sculptures were more like a riddle, while others were real depictions of the city; this was a great combo. I also liked that they had some really well-known cities, as well as more surprising choices. I feel like it was really doable to solve the puzzle, also with kids. Aside from the sand sculptures, there are some other activities. Most excitingly for kids; there is a little monorail. Also there was a lovely man with a barrel organ. He let kids play the instrument and gave them a diploma after completing the song. There is a huge playground and a shop. Facilities like the toilets were clean and there was a little restaurant area. Prices were really reasonable, especially considering the amount of effort put into everything. We walked around for a couple of hours, but I definitely you can fill a whole day if you go with kids. One downside was that inside, at the exhibition about the cities, the path was quite narrow, making it more difficult to maintain distance. This was especially the case when people in front of behind you moved at a different pace.

    A worthwile visit
Very good handcrafted sculptures in different styles. Each tells its own story, completed with lights and nicely decorated. The outside sculptues had suffered from the weather, because it was already open for half a year.
