With This Exhibit: Poles No Longer Apart - Now Part of a Heroic Tale
I traveled to The Netherlands for the 75th anniversary commemorations of Operation Market Garden, of which I have read a good deal, but wanted to learn more about the Polish efforts. Their contribution has been under-appreciated for far too long. This small, efficient exhibit, along with the wonderful book POLES APART (1993) by George F. Cholewczynski illustrates the actions of brave Polish Paratroopers lead by General S. Sosabowski. Artifacts and effective interpretive panels are housed in a church that was standing during the battle! Within a short walk, in the nice village of Driel, you can stand on the dike overlooking the Neder Rhein and across the river towards Oosterbeek and Arnhem, long the focus of the story of A BRIDGE TOO FAR. Rightfully so, “inclusive” stories are part of modern historical scholarship, and increase the possibility that more people will want to learn about the past. Dziękuję Ci, Polska! [Church is right in the charming village, with dining, and pub very nearby.]

Memorial for the brave Poles- op market garden
I went all the way from Hyderabad,India to visit Driel, in September 2019 on occasion of 75th Anniversary of op market garden. The idea was to relive the experiences of my ww2 hero, Gen Sosobowski and his Polish Airborne troopers. I realised in this museum the kind of misery heaped Upon these great warriors, who were so anxious to take on the Germans but were frustrated ,being stuck on Southern bank of Rhine. To add insult to injury they were denied war time honours despite the selfless efforts. It was obvious even the Dutch did not resist the British efforts to blame the Poles for their own shortcomings. I was moved to tears to see these details in the memorial. I was bit disappointed that in Driel village there were no directions to reach the camp site or the ferry site. I could not gauge where the airborne Poles landed amidst the incessant fire of German guns. There was no indication about location where British Airborne troops crossed the river during “ operation Berlin” withdrawal.
