    September 1944 Revisited
This is THE place to visit mid-September when the annual Arnhem Pilgrimage remembers the Allied parachute drop as part of Operation Market Garden. Although the north end of bridge at Arnhem was bravely held for 3 days, the landward advance fell short and Arnhem proved to to be "A Bridge Too Far". Nevertheless, the operation undoubtedly helped to shorten the war and the events of September 1944 are remembered each year with a deep sense of gratitude by the Dutch people. In these commemorations, from many years back, the slogan "A Bridge Too Far" has been superceded by a more forward looking "A Bridge to the Future". The whole emphasis is towards building for the future with a wide variety of youth-orientated programmes and events. On most days of the year the Heide is a vast empty space but, on the Saturday of the annual commemorations, it is thronged with tens of thousands of people, chiefly families, and you'll never see so many bicycles - ever!
