Manatee Observation & Education Center, Florida, United States

Great kayak tour

MOEC is an ideal place to learn more about the Treasure Coast's unique environment and its inhabitants, including the threatened Florida manatee. Inside you'll find an educational film (with closed-captioning), various aquariums, a touch-tank and interactive displays - all of which are enhanced by wonderful volunteers. Eco-boat tours are available along with a wildlife observation tower which provides visitors a bird's-eye-view of the Indian River Lagoon. MOEC is situated at the mouth of Moore's Creek which is a popular spot to see visiting manatees during colder months. There are 400-500 manatees living in our area year-round but, considering their backyard is 156 miles long and connected to a multitude of creeks and canals, it is never guaranteed that they will be visiting the Center at any given time. Please feel free to call ahead in advance to ask whether manatees are present. MOEC is supported by donations, memberships and the proceeds from its gift shop The Vanishing Mermaid.

    A memorable and enjoyable experience!
What a great place to learn about manatees and the conservation efforts to preserve them. A must-see is the 18 minute film at the visitor center which gives an overview of manatees in general and the conservation efforts being employed to save Florida manatees. I strongly recommend taking the 90 minute cruise in the Fort Pierce inlet to observe manatees, dolphins and other aquatic animals. The pontoon boat has comfortable seats and a canopy to provide shade. Everyone at the visitor center and on the boat are volunteers and very knowledgeable about the animals. A memorable and enjoyable experience!

No manatees, no staff, nice butterfly garden
The visitors center itself was closed due to that disease. They do have a two story observation tower to view fish, boats and manatees is it’s cold enough to force them upstream. It was warm when we were there, so no manatees Two things to note 1) there is a parking lot which is used for boat launching, so RVs and trailers can park and 2) the chamber of commerce is right next door and the people there are really nice
