Outstanding visit

Two seniors visited here in late January 2023 and had an excellent day. We literally spent from 10am until 5pm here. Between the actual lighthouse, the shipbuilder’s area (where they are building a couple of actual sea-going boats), the archaeology conservation building and the actual three story museum, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Note that we are history nerds and tend to absorb/read all of the information available, so YMMV in how long you stay. They even offer lighthouse keeper tours for a few dollars more that looked interesting but were all filled up for our available times. The actual museum had exhibits on the lighthouse, the keepers and their families, commercial shrimping in the area, and underwater archaeology they have done in the local rivers including cannons and other artifacts from the Revolutionary War that they have found and are conserving. Well worth your time. Elementary age children and older would most likely find it interesting also.

    Must do in St Augustine
The lighthouse was a highlight of our vacation! We took the Lighthouse Keepers Tour which is a one hour tour that’s offered a few days a week and must be booked 24 hours in advance. We had a great tour guide who took us all around the grounds and gave us a history lesson in this lighthouse and grounds and also lighthouses in general. They have a group that’s building boats right there on the grounds and it was fun to watch. We enjoyed trying a few different homemade pickles from their snack shop and also the best sangria I had the whole trip! Also homemade!

    Visiting with Small Children
Children have to be 44 inches tall to climb the tower. This is a safety precaution. Our 5 year old was not tall enough, so she was admitted for free, and one adult in our group was 1/2 price. We hiked the tower in shifts while our littlest stayed below. The map shows a kids area with a pirate ship for kids under 44 inches, but it was not there. As a result, our little one got pretty bored waiting. There is a lot to explore, but those of us hiking the tower wanted to see everything, so our 5 year old ended up doing some things twice. Our seven year old enjoyed being on the top of the lighthouse. On the rest of the grounds, there are many interactive exhibits for kids: different kinds of boats to sit in, touch screens, and replicas of artifacts to touch. They also have nice trails through the woods (bring bug spray if you do the trails.) The staff was excellent there, and the grounds were maintain impeccably. The price is not cheap, but you can see where the money goes. The gift shop has a lot of kid-friendly items at very good prices, so souvenirs are a real possibility.
