Things to do & places to visit in St. Augustine, Florida, United States

St. Augustine cover image
Saint Augustine is a luxurious, romantic vacation spot—you’ll find classic hotels and intimate restaurants. Those can be a dime a dozen, though. What sets Saint Augustine apart is its history—it’s the oldest European settlement in the U.S. And nowhere else in the world can you taste the waters of the Fountain of Youth Archeological Park (where Ponce de Leon may have landed). Who knows, if you vacation here, maybe you won’t need that Botox!

  6. 4.5 Castillo de San Marcos National Monument (11.0k reviews)
    - Good historical representation of the importance of the fort to the city's history.
    Monday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites • Castles • Monuments & Statues
Castillo de San Marcos National Monument image
Really enjoyed our visit. Use your national parks card for free entry. Self guided tour using literature from ticket booth. Recommend entering the fort, and then turning left and visiting the rooms in a clockwise motion (this way you'll visit the exhibits in their chronological order) until you've completed the ground level, then proceed to the upper level for some great views. A bit more interaction from available Rangers/Reenactors would have been good, but seemed staff inside the fort was limited. See more..
  7. 4.5 St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, Inc. (6.781 reviews)
    - Outstanding visit
Monday: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Lighthouses • History Museums
St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, Inc. image
Two seniors visited here in late January 2023 and had an excellent day. We literally spent from 10am until 5pm here. Between the actual lighthouse, the shipbuilder’s area (where they are building a couple of actual sea-going boats), the archaeology conservation building and the actual three story museum, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Note that we are history nerds and tend to absorb/read all of the information available, so YMMV in how long you stay. They even offer lighthouse keeper tours for a few dollars more that looked interesting but were all filled up for our available times. The actual museum had exhibits on the lighthouse, the keepers and their families, commercial shrimping in the area, and underwater archaeology they have done in the local rivers including cannons and other artifacts from the Revolutionary War that they have found and are conserving. Well worth your time. Elementary age children and older would most likely find it interesting also. See more..

    St. George Street image
Lovely old street with fabulous buildings. Easy to find, pedestrianised, yes some homeless guys drinking down the side of the road but no bother at all. Nice to wander along. We went after 5pm so street parking was free, some shops shut and we found the restaurants in this area to be very expensive. See more..

Tours will depart at 10 am, 11 am, 1 pm, 2 pm, 3 pm. Due to limited capacity, it is heavily suggested to purchase tickets in advance. Tours highlight the architectural heritage of the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, a nationally designated historic landmark building, built by Henry Flagler in 1888. The tour begins in the Rotunda, a 64-foot domed ceiling supported by eight ornately carved oak pillars. The interior dome displays stunning murals by George Maynard. 11. 4.5 St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park (3.961 reviews)
    - Wait until they’re older!
Monday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Nature & Wildlife Areas
St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park image
This is my 3rd or 4th time visiting the Alligator Farm but it’s been a few years. This was my first time with my 2 granddaughters- 3 and 20 months. It was fun, but they were done after about an hour and a half. They were only interested in the alligators and crocodiles for a while and feeding them was fun. We arrived too late for the 12:00 show and they were ready to go before the 3:-show. The prices have increased and at $35 for each adult (x5) and $20 for the 3year old (under 2 was free) … it was quite an expensive trip. At that price point, I was hoping that they had added some other animals. I would recommend this for older kids… but don’t spend this kind of money on the toddlers. See more..

  14. 4.5 Old Jail Museum (2.916 reviews)
    - Great stop for history fans
Monday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites
    Old Jail Museum image
The Old Jail Museum is in a complex north of the colonial town that has a number of activites, tours and shops. The workers in the complex all dress up like they're from the 1800s and walk around acting their parts. For example, there was a convict in stripes looking gruff and angry walking around and grumbling about the unfair treatment, hangmans noose, etc. He totally stayed in character when I said "How can they just let the criminals walk the streets here." Then he followed us around a bit. It was really funny. We had only a few hours, so we did the Oldest Store Museum tour and it was so much fun. The gentleman guide was a salesman and he played up the part in really cute ways. Very interactive and fun tour - and so cool to see all the old contraptions!! We were sad to not have time to do everything and will 100% be back. See more..

  23. 4.5 Vilano Beach (927 reviews)
    - Favorite St Augustine Beach Spot
    Beaches
    Vilano Beach image
I always love how quiet this beach is. You can always find your own spot to set up and there is never tons of people in the water. Perfect wave jumping spot and place to find shells. It is hit or miss if the beach is super sandy or covered in shell. The first day we came the whole beach was shell, but the rest of the trip the beach was nice and sandy. If you don’t have a chair and are planning on laying your towel straight on the beach, I highly recommend a beach mat/rug in case you hit a shell covered beach day. Dog friendly! See more..
