Well maintained, paved rail trail!

How sweet it was to take a bike ride from Fanning Springs to Cross City. Had we had more time, we would have kept on riding! The trail was so well maintained; in fact when we were riding, we passed a worker clearing the trail with a blower attached to his golf cart. He was so very respectful. The views were nice, giving a flavor of this part of the country. The bridge was the highlight. Signage was helpful when it came to any roadways we were to cross. Most of this part of the trail was exposed, so if you are sensitive to the sun, beware! Thanks to the Florida State Parks system. You've done well with this State Trail!

    Flat, Paved and Shady Trail
In Florida, shade is important. We parked at Fanning Springs, and rode 9mi to Chiefland. Trail is well maintained, and flat with a few very gentle grades. It is shaded most of the way, with a canopy of mature trees in many spots. Then we turned around, went back, and went 4mi across the river to Old Town. Flat and scenic with trees on the south side of the trail providing the shade. We did not go west past Old Town because the trail to Cross City runs right next to the road most of the way. We turned around and headed east 7miles to Trenton. The trail runs parallel to the road, but there is a buffer. It is more open with partial shade. Total round trip: about 35mi. Other than the towns on the ends, the trail runs through rural farm areas, so bring water. Definitely worth the trip.

    Morning Ride
I love this trail! Hubby and I rode about 24 miles of it. I can't wait to go back again. Flat, well taken care of. I especially loved the bridge over the river. Next time we ride I'll have to stop and take some photos.
