A. E. Backus Gallery & Museum, Florida, United States

A great tribute to Florida Art Royalty!

This is a lovely museum in a very nice setting near the Indian River. The history of AE Backus and The Florida Highwaymen is a great story and the art is even better. If you have time, head up to Downtown Vero Beach and stop by Roy McLendon’s studio. A one-on-one with one of the last surviving highwaymen is pretty special.

Florida Landscape Art by Backus and Highwaymen
I retired from work and the hustle bustle of Maryland and moved to the Treasure Coast. I’m use to going to many of the galleries and activities offered by the Smithsonians and wasn’t expecting to find such a gem of a gallery. Listening to the story of A.E. Backus and his relationship with Alfred Hair from which the story of The Highway Men artists begin. I’ve learned that several paintings by a few of the African American artists that paved the way to become landscape artists have original pieces in the African American Museum of the Smithsonian. Who knew! After you enjoy the art in the Backus museum, there are wonderful restaurants within walking distance. An enriching and pleasant experience.

Wonderful exhibits of paintings by a Florida legend
We found the Backus Museum and Gallery to be charming. Lots of his original artwork on display with many consignment pieces available for purchase and many reproductions available. The curator was informative and friendly. We learned a lot about him, his Ft. Pierce life and his involvement with The Highwaymen artists. We wanted to get 2 reproductions (HINT: on the advice of the staff we learned that when you Join the Museum for a $60 membership and you get 25% off all purchases !!!) Not too many folks around at mid-day so we could linger at a specific artwork and wander at our leisure between the various galleries. Parking was free and easy.
