I am planning a trip back!

Applewood is the historic Flint, Mich., estate of automotive pioneer Charles Stewart Mott, open seasonally from May–October. In addition to the home and attached greenhouse, the 34-acre estate includes an apple orchard with 29 heirloom varieties, extensive gardens, a gatehouse, barn, and coop. Applewood Estate is a Michigan Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. C.S. Mott built Applewood in 1916 as a family home and gentleman’s farm. Though the site is no longer operated as a farm and does not house animals, today it remains open to the public as a historic site, community resource, place of beauty and tranquility, and a tribute to the legacy of C.S. Mott. The enduring legacy of C.S. and Ruth Mott is their extraordinary commitment to civic participation, and we work to embody this spirit in our work at Applewood.

    Family visit
While visiting from out of state, we by with our family of nine to walk around the gardens and barn. From the moment we walked through the entrance, the staff and volunteers were friendly, knowledgeable and professional. Even though it’s virtually impossible to get an inside tour of the estate without a reservation, Elena agreed (without hesitation) to work us into her tour schedule. Elena was an awesome tour guide! Because she worked for Mrs Mott for the last 5 years of her life, Elena had so many great stories and inside information about the Mott history. The home and gardens were beautiful but what made this visit memorable was Elena. If you schedule a tour, ask for Elena! The Applewood Estate is a must-see in Flint. This family represents such a critical part of Flint’s history.

A beautiful way to spend the day with senior family members
Tours of the gardens and of the home are free. Check the website for tour schedule or call to schedule a group (private) tour. I think they operate tours Thursday thru Sunday. We visited Applewood twice. The first time for a private garden tour (these private tours must be booked in advance). There were five of us in the group. Four were in their 70's and 80's. The staff was soooo accommodating. Given the age of members of our group, we requested to be picked up at the entrance. They sent a golf cart to the parking lot to pick us up. We then enjoyed a tour of the grounds from the comfort of our golf cart. There were stops along the way to get out and wander thru the various gardens, barns, etc. The gardens at the estate are beautiful. Elena was our awesome tour guide. She was so knowledgeable and offered so many wonderful stories about the history of the Mott Family. It was a lovely way to spend the day. We then booked a house tour for two weeks later, requesting Elena again. She gave us a wonderful tour of the Mott home and again shared special stories of her memories of Mrs. Mott. It was a wonderful day and we are so thankful for the gift of Applewood and our new friend Elena.
