Lovely park
We picked up a large map of the park at the Visit Tervuren visitors’ centre and took an enjoyable stroll along canals and ponds on a sunny October Sunday afternoon. The landscaped park offers lovely views on the neo-classical museum palace (1904-1909), modelled on the Petit Palais in Paris, and the smaller Palace of Colonies or Africa Palace (1897) modelled on the Petit Trianon. There is a smattering of old statues, most of them close to the Colonial Palace and the museum. To the east of the garden there is an interesting contemporary fountain entitled “The Congo, I presume”, by Belgian artist Tom Frantzen. In recent times it has been vandalised twice despite the fact that the ensemble is clearly critical of the colonial policy of Belgian King Leopold II in Africa. A clear case of misdirected iconoclasm.

Beautiful but disappointing
Visited Park van Tervuren today. It is a beautiful place with nearly endless walking, biking, and relaxation opportunities. Parking wasn't difficult today, as it is a weekday. But weekends are much busier and I can imagine parking would be difficult. The disappointment came with upkeep of the grounds. Upkeep just does not befit the grandeur of the place. A few dead roses here, huge weeds in some of the hedges, some untrimmed hedges, walking on gravel and dirt. But don't let that hold you back! Just be prepared for an un-perfect experience at no cost to you. Certainly fun for children; noticed a large children's playground.

Normally stunning, now being serviced or short of water?
I went for a walk in the park next to where normally one would find filled large ponds. However, I came across closed shops/cafes? trucks excavating, a building site, no water and closed off areas.... not sure what is happening but a poor show on the part of the Tervuren administration for not letting its residents know what is going on.... the ponds looked really tacky, although they did seem to look maintained... rather than filled with rubbish! Just wondering whether it is a water-shortage problem???
