Gent-Sint-Pieters Railway Station, Flanders, Belgium

Historical impressive trainstation built in 1912 but forever in ongoing renovation

This impressive historical train station was built in 1912 and had several and still ongoing renovations. Especially worth visiting is the entrance hall with murals depicting several major cities in Belgium. Because renovation is a lengthy process the walking corridors to the platform are a bit bland and not up to the splendor of the main entrance. Now the station is a blend of historical elements (the tower, the entrance, the older tracks) and added modern elements (the roof over the main entrance). Public transport connections are nearby if you head out the main entrance: tram, bus, taxi are in very near walking distance.

    Looks beautiful at sunset
During our day trip to Ghent from Brussels we arrived at St. Pieters station, one of the two train stations in Ghent. It’s not a big station but the walk from the platform to the main hall was fairly long and some construction work was going on as well. The hall, which has beautiful artwork on the walls and ceiling, is equipped with vending machines & manned counters for purchase of train tickets, seating for waiting passengers as well as kiosks to pick up coffee & snacks. It also has luggage storage facility. Boarding and de boarding assistance is extended to Wheelchair travellers provided an online request is made well in advance. The station also has a wheelchair accessible toilet, which is a boon for wheelchair users. The bus and tram stops are just outside the station but it took us some time to figure out where to buy the tickets from. The old town (the main attraction of the city) is around 20/25 minutes by tram. Note that a day ticket is cheaper than 2 single journey tickets. Finally, would like to mention that the building looks quite pretty during sunset which we noticed on our return to the station in the evening.

    Work In Progress
I visited Gent Sint-Pieters railway station in January 2023 as I needed to change trains here. At the time it was clear there is building work going on the improve accessibility in the station. On my arrival the platform I got off the train on was low to the ground and I would imagine this would be a problem for anyone who struggles with mobility. Getting to other more modern platforms that have been completed these have escalators and lifts so once the station refurbishment is completed this will be much better. Outside the station there are trams and buses to get around the local area. Trains run to Brussels, Antwerp, Oostende, Bruges and Kortijk. There are kiosks to get drinks and snacks around the station.
