Staggering Proportions

We visited the cemetery with 2 couples and 1 child (9 years old). Driving up, I already caught my breath when I got a glimpse over the hedges of rows upon rows of crosses that stretch out into the distance. The numbers are staggering. 39000 graves are here. As you wander down, you can’t help but think about who they were, what were their dreams, what about their families.... you see graves of men who were the same age as you are now, have the same last name of someone you know, or shares the same birthday as your cousin. The cemetery is meticulously cared for. When you arrive, walk through the courtyard of the cafe, to the monument and up through one of the internal staircases to get an overview of the fields of graves. It’s a sobering moment.

Awesome large German war cemetery
This is one of the largest German war cemeteries from World War II in the world, with 38,563 graves from the Second World War and 542 from the First World War. The large number of crosses and the vast area are very, very impressive. Even the sober central memorial makes a big impression. The cemetery gives a very gloomy impression and is therefore a real place to remember the war dead.

Neatly organized&kept graveyard in honor of fallen German soldiers
Thoughts come to mind in a place like this. The honor of young men who lost their lives in WWII is astonishing and the place even offers educational camps for young students. May we learn from history...
