STUNNING LOCATION AND INTERIOR

Tours are given at set times. It was only in Spanish so almost all of the detail was lost on me. Apparently 80% of visitors are Spanish. Pictures could only be taken outside. The guide gave his talk in an area and you were given adequate time to examine the area further. Some of the ceiling work was reminiscent of the Sistine Chapel. I liked in particular the Choir Book Room, used by 16th century choirs. In the Embroidery Museum, some of the vestments were jewel-encrusted. The blend of architectural styles over the centuries is striking, including the Mudejar cloister. The trip naturally ended in the gift shop. The first meeting of Queen Isabella and Christopher Columbus was held in the monastery. The first North American natives to reach European soil were baptized here.

    Gorgeous Monastery in the Mountains
This monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage site and definitely worth the drive through the mountains to go tour it. You have to take a formal tour in Spanish but so it. The interior is beautiful and inside the little museum you'll see some El Greco paintings and a small crucifix carved by Michelangelo.

    Unique experience
We've been in Guadelupe in october 2006 to see the black virgin in the church of the royal monastery. We thougt it was better to go there in autumn, because in the summer holidays it must be very hot and very crowded. You can see the virgin in the church, but it is very far and behind bars. To see her closely you have to take the guided tour through the monastery which is very interesting. At the end of the tour a monk is bringing you behind the statue and you can see her closely: a unique experience whether you are catholic or not. Guadelupe is a small touristic village. You can stay in the Parador or in the Hospederia of the convent, but there are hotels and hostals enough. We stayed in the Posada de Rincon at the central square. That was OK. Please go to Guadelupe if you want to understand something of the authentic Spanish religious culture. The virgin of Guadelupe is the best.
