Puente de Alcantara, Extremadura, Spain

Worth a detaour

We drove through Spain from and to different parts of Portugal and stopped in Alcantara, which was incredibly tourist free and so interesting. We had a very good value lunch and a walk around the town, and this bridge is well worth the detour. It is amazing to drive over a Roman bridge - and you may not be able to do so for very long as a new bridge is planned.

    Don't Miss
The Puente de Alcántara is the old Roman arch bridge in the western side of Toledo that used to be one of the entrances into the walled city. Close up it looks magnificent, but if you have time to see it from afar, then it looks even better. Possibly the best landmarks of the city.

    Amazing
It is amazing that this bridge was built by the Romans and we cans still drive on it! Stop, get out and marvel at this structure. Stop and wonder if in 1,500 years someone else will be doing the same.
