    Beautiful City
The Plaza Mayor is the focal point of the city and is surrounded by some magnificent monuments, overlooked by a statue of Francisco Pizarro mounted on horseback in front of the Iglesia San Martin. One of the most important buildings is the Palacio Marques de la Conquista, build by Hernando Pizarro, the only one of the Pizarro brothers to return from South America, though he did initially spend 20 years in prison in Medina del Campo. This Palace is not open to the public and sadly is falling into disrepair; it is still in the ownership of the descendants of Pizarro. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes and walk up from the Plaza to the old walled town, where there are some interesting places to see, as many of the historical monuments which the guide books refer to are in private ownership and not open to the public. One interesting church is the Iglesia de la Preciosa Sangre de Dios, which houses an extensive and interesting display of the conquest of South America. The supposed home of Francisco Pizarro is a disappointment. Beyond the upper part of the old town is a short walk to the Moorish castle. Everywhere is celebrated, hero like, the success of the Conquistadores from Trujillo; Pizarro was the most famous but Orellana also came from the town, and a bust commemorating the fifth centenary of his birth was erected in 2011. In the promotion of the achievements of the Conquistadores, no regard or even briefest reference is given to modern history's recognition of the murder, plundering and savage brutality of the Conquistadores who not only fought with the Incas and the Aztecs, but also amongst themselves.
