Catedral de Plasencia, Extremadura, Spain

4.5 (591 reviews) Spent Ranking #3 in Extremadura Churches & Cathedrals

Unexpected

In such a small town we didn't expect such a big and beautiful cathedral. Champion league. Lushly decorated organ and altar. Recommended

    Two ancient cathedrals
The two ancient buildings stand side by side. As reported by others, an exhibition dominates the older cathedral - tickets cost just 6 euros and there are explanations in English. Hundreds of exhibits and displays of religious artefacts, sculptures, paintings ( incl two El Grecos). There can be long queues for the exhibition, and it might take 90 minutes and more to get around. Some of the narrative about Spanish conquests I found distasteful and archaic, but interesting nonetheless.

    an interesting ancient catedral
I was a bit disappointed in having to pay 4 euro to enter the cathedral but soon realised that a visit was impossible without the aid of the commentary in English which was included in the entrance fee. The explanation of all the parts was quite comprehensive and very informative. It takes just over an hour for the visit and it is worth a visit. Unfortunately there was a school trip of teenagers who were neither interested or quiet but once they left we could enjoy the peace of the place.
