A highlight of Merida

For us, viewing this large Roman villa from 25 AD was one of the best things we did in Merida. It isn't near most of the other attractions, but it is easily walkable from the center of town. It is very well signed in English. You view frescoes and wonderfully preserved mosaics, reception rooms, garden and patio areas, winter and summer (subterranean) bedrooms, and private cold, warm, and hot baths. This is well-worth going out of the way for, as it gives you an idea of life for the wealthy at that time. I'd recommend going to the adjacent Columbarios, an ancient graveyard. It was interesting how similar their death/burial beliefs were to ours and other cultures.

    Very large Roman Villa
On a day of exploring Merida we came across this archaeological site. Although the name on the tourist map (Case de Mitreo" is misleading because it implies a connection to Mithras - apparently there was a Mithrian found under the bull ring, the connection with this villa in tenuous! The remains of the villa are extensive, with three atriums, and many rooms, some underground presumably to get away from the heat in summer. There are the remains of a bathouse next to the site. Many of the walls have still got the remains of paint on them and the remains of floor mosaics still convey the wealth of this site. There is even a female figure adorned with a bikini! Really well worth a visit.

    Impressive Roman villa
A large house with many rooms and mosaic floors. A walkway and information in Spanish and English guides you through. Very interesting and the best of the three Roman houses excavated in Merida, but not as complete as VillaRoma near Leon. Entrance is included on the Combined ticket. An easy walk from the Amphitheatre, opposite the bullring.
