A Gold Mine in archeology!

This set of Ancient Roman remains is awe-inspiring! With so much of it intact, it’s difficult to believe it wasn’t uncovered until 1910. It was a magnificent job of, not only, finding this site, but also cleaning it up to the current status. While viewing the stage, I could almost try to envision one of Seneca’s tragedies or comedies being acted out. Not being an expert in acting, I think some of today’s techniques, like “an aside” actually come these Ancient Greek and Ancient Roman plays. It was a job well done and very much worth a visit by anyone!

    Merida amphitheater
Merida was founded by the Romans as Emerita Augusta, the capitol of the province of Lusitania, and in that capacity it boasted terrific facilities endemic to any large Roman city. The amphitheater is one of the best preserved. It's a terrific site.

    Incredibly complete amphitheatre
Note, some of the published photos are of the adjacent Roman theatre. This is the amphitheatre when helpful guide boards explain in Spanish and English what went on at the amphitheatre. It is remarkably ‘complete’. You can walk through the tunnels spectators would have used to get to their seats, or those used by the gladiators to get into the arena. Allow at least half an hour, and be sure to buy a comb8ned ticket at the box office to get entrance to 6-7 key sites at a much reduced price. All the sites are relatively close together and can be seen in a couple of days
