    Forte di San Leo image
The guide book promised one of the best castles. The guide book did not disappoint. Perched dramatically on a cliff face for more than half its outside, this edifice stands out from afar. The old town, though nice, is not as good as others in the area but the castle is all you'll be noticing. Inside (it costs) is a worthy museum. Rather than having a surfeit of anything, it has a bit of everything, including a most poignant reminder of a great thinker of the 16th century who died after several years in the prison here; a victim of the Inquisition. Flowers on the now disused bed are a powerful reminder of foul deeds done in the name of religion in the past. See more..

    - A unique place- highly recommend!

    Rocchetta Mattei image
The astonishing castle Rocchetta Mattei is a hidden jewel of the Appenines sitting on a scenic hilltop between Bologna and Florence. With its labyrinth of interconnected rooms, courtyards, passages, stairways, and towers and a unique mixture of styles, from Medieval to Middle-Eastern and Moorish, Rocchetta Mattei is a piece of architecture like no other. The 19th-century castle has been the cradle for electrohomeopathy, a system of healing that made its creator Count Cesare Mattei known all over the world: among his patients some eminent people like the Czar Alexander II, King Ludwig III of Bavaria and Empress Elizabeth of Austria (Sissi). Mattei had become so famous that he was even mentioned by Dostoeveskji in his novel The Brothers Karamazov. Among its most spectacular rooms, the Sala dei Novanta (Hall of Nineties), the Chapel, a breathtaking reproduction of the interior of Cordoba’s Mezquita and the Lions’ Courtyard, inspired by the courtyard of the Alhambra in Granada. Castello di Vigoleno image
Beautiful medieval village with wonderful views over the hills above Salsomaggiore Terme. When we went there it wasn't at all busy, but judging by the size of the car parks outside the village I guess it could get very popular. Some friends went on Monday and said they were the only people there. Restaurants available for you fuel up in. Not sure how else you could get there other tan by car, but we did spot a few bus stops on the narrow windy roads! See more..

    Castello di Grazzano Visconti image
G.V. Is a bit like marmite - you either like it or not. It's a medieval village - totally fake as it was built just over 100 years ago by the Visconti family. I think it is well worth a visit - they have a really good agricultural museum area and a good selection of tourist shops without the rip off prices that you usually find. See more..

    Rocca di Vignola image
On a sandstone spur, this fortress stands over the Panaro valley. Documented back to 1178, it is one of the most interesting examples of fortification architecture in Emilia. In the fourteenth century it belonged to the Este family of Ferrara, but in 1401 they donated it to the Uguccione Contrari family who turned it into a refined mansion. In 1577, the Fortress was handed over to the Boncompagni family. Purchased by the Cassa di Risparmio di Vignola bank in 1965, it was handed over to the Vignola Foundation in 1998. The massive quadrilateral structure spread over five floors, with three corner towers – Nonantola, Donne and Pennello – is encircled by projections for plunging defence, typical of the XV century. In the courtyard, the small fortress stands to the left and open the Contrari and Grassoni halls. Winter opening times. 15. 4.5 Castello di Varano de' Melegari (328 reviews)
    - Great visit around the castle (in English)!
Tuesday: Spent < 1 hour Castles
Castello di Varano de' Melegari image
To be honest, we weren't expecting much given how many castles we have visited in the area. However, we had an intelligent and animated guide who conducted the tour in excellent English and transmitted her enthusiasm about this fortress to us in a matter of minutes (while managing to keep my 8-year old entertained for almost the whole 50m tour). The castle is full of historical details, once-innovative strategic structures which were then imported around the world, and a splendid view of the valley/Ceno River. It's true that you need some imagination to picture how it must of been (it's not Versailles), but our excellent guide made that easy for us and I definitely recommend stopping off to see it if you're in the area - or have gone to eat at Osteria delle Vignes or the lovely Castle Restaurant for lunch. (Events are organized at the castle for kids and adults as well). Brava, Lara! See more..

    - A Must if you are anywhere near....

    Rocca Viscontea image
Very cool old castle. Most of what is written is in Italian but there is good info online in English :) The few folks who were working there were pleasant and helpful. But the main things are the amazing view from the top - where else can you be in a castle and look down into a town that literally looks like it did hundreds and hundreds of years ago??? There are a few tv antennas but even the power lines are mostly hidden. The interior has cool stuff to check out. Just ducking into the tiny doorways makes you feel like you might run into Dante coming out. Or at least some dude in funny clothes. See more..

Don’t leave Cesena without visiting. We had a fascinating tour from Ricardo in English. Only 5 euros each. The history of the castle is the history of Italy with the Pope, the British, Napoleon, Hitler and Leonardo deVinci all involved through the centuries. Lots of hidden parts with traps for invaders and historic weapons, armour and furniture to view. See more..

  21. 4.0 Canossa Castle (205 reviews)
    - Marvelous historical ruin
Tuesday: 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites • Castles
    Canossa Castle image
The castle that you read about in history books has not been around for half a millenium so don't expect much, the views from the top of the hill, however, are magnificent. The place decidedly deserves a detour if you are somewhere near Parma but only history freaks will make it the main point of their journey. There is a small museum which explains (in Italian) its historical significance built on the spot where the early medieval castle once stood (the surviving ruins date from a later period). See more..

We were on a tour so our guide arranged our guided tour to the castle. It was amazing. There were dates that were written on the walls starting from the 1300's with people's names on them. So much history here...It was really a great visit. Something we probably would have never found without our tour. We visited in September of 2014 See more..

Check on the web-site if the structure is closed for events. Fortress and Castle are the stronghold of the most important village of the valley, former property (XIII century) of the family Scotti, who today, with Prince Corrado Gonzaga, still hold the property. The castle was converted at the end of the eighteenth century in a quiet noble house; it is furnished with period furniture and holds inside stylish decorations and precious frescoes.
