Wonderfull, Impressive

A must visit in Turkey. One of many hospitals of Ottoman Empire from 15th century. It is all animated. You can see how life was in those days, how the patients were treated including psychiatry. This is the hospital. On one side you will find the medical university from the 15th century and on the other side you will find the almshouse. All with one ticket, all animated and all next to each other. Additionally, the mosque again from 15th century is also there. As long as you are dressed accordingly, everybody is accepted inside. If there is prayer, you can still go in. Just sit at the back and watch silently. If you want, you can copy them.

The only one special health museum in the universe
It will be a loss if someone visits Edirne and doesn't go to this health museum. For me it is mandatory and the only one in universe. The museum is amazing, it has many rooms exhibiting the medical practices in the Ottoman period. The medical students, the classroom, the library, "laboratory", kitchen, laundry room, and big room where people played relaxing theraupeutical music, similar like hospital plus mayo clinic. It is interesting because I found the snake as part of the story in this health museum. I wonder if there is somehow connection with Asclepion ancient healing center in Pergamon / Bergama, just 600 km away from Edirne ?.

    Award winning museum
Health Museum is part of a complex built as a hospital in 1488 by Sultan II Beyazid, son of Fatih Sultan Mehmet . The unit has served continuously for 400 years all medical diciplines and performing operations , later as mental hospital until Russian occupation in 1888. The adjoining medrese served as Medical School educating medical students . The nicely renovated health museum has two sections, an open one where rooms for doctors, guards, examination, detention , medicine and kitchens for cooking and medicen making are lined along with a well groomed garden . The second one is covered where there are four rooms and two eyvans one of which is occupied by musicians and a pool in the middle was for theraphy. All the rooms in the covered section are decorated with period furniture , health tools and wax figures to impersonate the patients and doctors, musicians, pharmacist to display the healing process in the mental health institution. The most interesting part is the sound of music played by live musicians then and running water from the pool in the middle of the room here they believed to have a very powerful effect on healing. The informative museum is well worth the visit. There is an entrance fee , the location not in walking distance you can drive or take the minibuses that is marked A from city center , which passes by the complex ( but always double check) , the complex with its mosque, medrese ( for educating medical students)and kitchen where food was delievered for poor ( during my visit the kitchen part was under renovation and was closed) should take about one to two hours .
